A Simple Solution

I’m sure you’re all very aware of my vinegar obsession…  I can see your head nodding through the screen… Or maybe you read yesterday’s post…?  Anyhow, I have since gotten over the smell of vinegar as I find it’s cleansing and other useful characteristics more advantageous than the smell annoying.  However, for those of you that really, REALLY don’t like the smell here is a simple solution.  Literally.

Infused Vinegar Water
2 cups water
1/2 cup of lemon juice
2 cups of vinegar

Heat the water and lemon juice on the stove until boiling.  Turn the heat to medium low and let the water and lemon juice continue at a rolling boil for 2 minutes.  Remove from heat and stir in the vinegar.  Let the mixture cool and then pour into a spray bottle.  Label and store in a cool, dry place.
Solution can be reheated if desired.  For a stronger cleaning solution, reduce the amount of water to 1 cup or eliminate all together.  If you eliminate it, boil your lemon juice with the vinegar.
You can also use lemon peels, orange peels, lime peels, rose petals, mint leaves or extract (1 Tbs for every 2 cups water), or essential oils to scent your vinegar.  With those options you can make your vinegar solution smell like just about anything!

My Vinegar Obsession

A couple months ago I planted some herbs.  Spearmint, rosemary, oregano, cilantro, parsley, basil and chives.  The spearmint, rosemary and oregano have yet to sprout… I’m thinking they probably won’t.  That’s what I get for planting them in February…
If you haven’t gathered by now, I have a thing for vinegar.  It’s my go-to cleaner.  It’s cheap, safe for my family and economical.  And it’s SOO multi-purpose.
With the weather getting warmer, I’m taking my obsession outdoors.  Here’s a few of my favorite things to use vinegar for outside the home:
- My parents have ants something terrible.  We stop ants from gathering by pouring white distilled vinegar on the area.  Get rid of anthills by pouring full strength vinegar on them.

- Little Monkey has a fun little sandbox he loves to play in.  It’s actually a small plastic swimming pool.  And there are several cats in my parent’s neighborhood.  UGH, right?!  Discourage cats from getting into the kids’ sandbox with white distilled vinegar.  Pour two cups of vinegar in to the sandbox and let the sand dry.
- Flowers are expensive, and thus, reserved for special occasions.  I help preserve any flowers I get by adding 2 tablespoons white distilled vinegar and 1 teaspoon sugar to a quart of water in a vase.  This will also help liven any droopy heads.

- Keeping those flowers around for a while can cause that icky line on the vase.  Get rid of the water line by filling it with a solution of half water and half white distilled vinegar.  Or soak a paper towel in white distilled vinegar and stuff it into the vase so that it is in contact with the water line.
- Remove crusty rim deposits on house planters or attached saucers by soaking them for several hours in an inch of full-strength white distilled vinegar.
- We just got some new patio furniture at a garage sale.  It’s perfect for our patio.  Clean and sanitize outdoor furniture and picnic tables with a cloth soaked in white distilled vinegar.  Let air dry.
- My husband’s family is from Northern Idaho and are big into berry picking in the summertime.  We often plan entire huckleberry picking days while we’re up visiting.  This can leave stains like you wouldn’t believe though.  Remove berry stains on your hands by rubbing them with white distilled vinegar.

- Clean plastic patio furniture with a solution of 1 tablespoon white distilled vinegar to 1 gallon of water.  If your furniture is especially gross, mix in a tablespoon of baking soda.
See?  Isn’t vinegar AHHH-MAZE-ING!?  Now, go clean something outside!

Help Wanted: Summer Daze Giveaways!

I live for summer.  Like literally.  I love the sunshine, the flowers, the warmth, the flip flops, the birds, the flowers, the fresh fruit, the county fairs, the farmer’s market, the camping and hiking, picnics, family gatherings, trips t the beach, traveling… I could go on and on and on and on.

I have something exciting up my sleeve… but I need some help.  Remember the Spring Fling Giveaways that April at Wildflowers and Whimsy hosted in April?  Well, I had a lot of fun.  I also had a couple people ask about being a part of the next big giveaway event.  But, there wasn’t really one in the works, as far as I know of.  SOOOOO…

Why not combine the two?!  That’s right, a GIVEAWAY event in celebration of SUMMER!  But, here’s where you come in.  I can’t afford to host a big giveaway event on my own.  If you are interested in hosting a giveaway for the Summer Daze Giveaways, please email me: whilehewasnapping[at]gmail[dot]com.  I will send you an email with all the details.  Want some easy advertising?

Guest Post: Time Well Spent

Today we are lucky to have the talented Suze from Time Well Spent here to show us how to make a ca-ute headband and hair bow holder.  I'll keep this short and simple and turn the time over to Suze:

Hello Everyone,

My name is Suze, and I am originally from Haiti. In an interesting turn of events, I found myself living in the Mountain West of the United States. Being in a different environment took a little time for adapting, but I'm loving it here. I have two beautiful children(a 3 years old boy and an 18 months old sassy & bossy girl) who keep me busy most of the time and married to the most amazing men(November 2006). I love making bows, photography, sewing ( just started) and scrapbook
Actually, let me tell you when I started making bows. It all began when our family had a bit of a shock! Our second child was supposed to be another boy, but lo and behold, the doctor pulled out a girl! From that moment I have enjoyed the process of raising a little princess. In anticipation of when she would have a head of hair... (She is getting there)... I started to make hair bows and all things girly.
Today I am going to show you how to make an easy  hair bows and headband holder using a canvas
                                                                         Materials need

  • Canvas ( size of your choice)
  • Fabric
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Ribbons
I use my hot glue gun to cover the canvas with your choice of fabric, you can also use staples. It is brown and pink to match baby girl's other hair bow holders.
Then measure you ribbons to go across ( don't forget to burn the end of you ribbons), you can pick how far apart you want them to be from each other. I even add a cute bow on top because I am crazy and want to put a bow on anything. The brown ribbon in the left, I use velcro to keep it together so it can be detachable to put Pony'O and the one in the left I also use velcro and it is for headbands.
And here is the finishing product, really happy about how it turned out and plus I can make even more bows for baby girl!
Let me know if you have any questions. I also will love to see if you make one, so send me a link or pictures.
I also make lot and lot of bows . . . Some will even say I am a bit  addicted. Recently, I have been learning to sew and made a few skirts and ties. Hope you guys will come by Time Well Spent and visit for a bit :)
Thank you Krista, hope you a having a fabulous day!!!!!!

Happy Crafting Everyone!

Thanks, Suze! Oh, my goodness, adorable!  I love everything about that... the polka dots, the colors, the simplicity.  Awwe.  Love.  Make sure you head over to visit Suze and check out her other great projects!

Blogging: Custom Background on Blogger

Ok, I am definitely not a pro at this blog thing.  I'll be the first to admit it.  But, I am the sole force behind While He Was Napping.  I design my background, my buttons, my links, the navigation bar, my logo and icon, and the favicon (the little icon next to the URL in the address bar).  Everything you see, I did.  Now, I'm not trying to toot my own horn or anything, just giving you an idea of how much time and work I put into this.  Because I spend so much time doing these things, I have learned a thing or two.  I thought I'd share some of my findings with you.

When I want to do something to While He Was Napping, I typically have to Google it.  I know a little HTML code, but definitely not enough to just sit down and write out a new element in HTML.  Ha, that stuff can be really confusing!  You miss one period or bracket and it messes up EVERYTHING!  So, pre-written code will totally be your friend.  Just make sure you copy every little thing.

There just weren't enough pictures in the top half of this post....

Today, I'm gonna walk you through designing your own background:
I cheat when I do my backgrounds.  I just don't have time to make them from scratch, so I will use digital kits I find on the internet (I always give credit to the designers, although I should probably post it permanently instead of in a post).  Or I take photos of scrapbook paper/elements I actually have, upload them and then edit and use them that way.  My current background is from the Chore Day kit and the Courage kit available at Summertime Designs  Ok, the kit isn't by Summer.  Correen Silke is actually the author.  But both of these ladies are SUPER talented.  Seriously, these girls are Ah-MAZE-Zing!

Ok, first, you'll have to download the kits or upload your photos.  Then, open up PhotoShop or another editing software.  PhotoShop is my preferred program.  Open a new project.  There isn't really an industry 'standard' as for dimensions on your site.  It depends on screen size and since everyone has different size screens, it will vary.  You have to decide what you want.  The two most common dimensions are 800x600 pixels and 1024x768 pixels.  Not very many people have a screen resolution of 800x600, but there are some.  It all depends on what you want. Anyway... good luck with that decision (I use 1024x768, in case you care).

Layout your design as you wish.  It's just like scrap booking on the computer!  With less mess!  That's my favorite part.  If you don't know how to do this, do some Googling on "digital scrap booking".  Or email me.  I'll answer what I can.  When you get it laid out like you want, save it as a .jpg image.

Now, you will need somewhere to host your image.  Photobucket or Flickr work well, I use Photobucket just because I had that account before I had Flickr and all my stuff is already there.  Photobucket also provides the code is an upfront and easy to access html code for your image.  I'm not sure if Flickr provides all that or not.  After you sign in, upload the image from your computer to your Photobucket.  Save the image to your account.  On your home screen, hover over your image.  A box should pop up with a bunch of different html codes.  Click on the "Direct Link" code and copy.
Click the photos for larger images.

After you copy the code, log into Blogger.  On your dashboard, select the "Design" tab.  Once that tab opens, select "Edit HTML" in the navigation bar under the tabs.  Then look for the code snipet "body { background".  It should be right under your template definitions code.  Ctrl+F will let you search for it.  When you find the code, look for the tag "url".  If it isn't there, type it in.  Then, paste your code inside parenthesis and quotation marks.

Once that code is in there, hit the preview button to make sure it worked.  In editing your blog, the preview button will become one of your most treasured friends.

A new window or tab will open, showing what changes your code has made.  In the preview, you should see your new background.  If it's not there, double check your code and make sure it looks exactly like mine does in the photo above.

If everything looks good, make sure you save your template in order for the changes to take effect.  Now go visit yourself and admire all your hard work!  =]

Good Luck!

Weekend Wander #27

Welcome to this week's party!  Real quick, I'll give ya'll a couple features and then we'll get right along to the party!  Last week was a great party, there were soo many cool things.  I hope you checked them out.

I had to give Joy at Momma's Kinda Crafty a shout out for her link up to Momma's Tool Box.  Every momma woman needs one of these.  My life would be soo much easier right now if I didn't have to go hunting for a tool every time I need one.

Becky at Rub Some Dirt on It shared this ca-ute Easter garland.  She tells it as a "how not to" tutorial, but I think it turned out just adorable.  Perfection is over-rated anyway.  This has some personality to it.

Thanks for sharing, ladies!  Grab a featured button from the side bar.
And THANKS to everyone who linked up!

On with the party!  There are no rules, except to keep it family friendly.  I'd love for you to link back or grab a button though.  Help get your projects out there.  I'd also love for you to follow, but you don't have to.  Please no commercial sites.  And please visit each other.  By linking, you are granting permission for me to use a photo in a feature with credit and a link back to you.  Let's Party!
