My kids love ABCmouse too! They play mostly on the computer because, as you mentioned the app is a monthly subscription I have yet to convince myself is entirely worth it, but it is a good one that keeps my kids entertained and learning. Its got a great sight words section. I love when they’re learning and don’t even realize its “lessons”

While not an app, but a website, check out http://www.sightandsoundreading.com -children can learn to read for free on the site. There are free videos and worksheets from a teacher who explicitly teaches the children to read. It really helps struggling readers because they go slowly and there is a lot of repetition.
