This is a great point! It is a wide pattern so make sure you have enough fabric. If your fabric has a pattern where orientation matters, make sure you have enough fabric. For my 6'3" husband, it requires 3 yards of fabric to make him a pair of pants. Thanks for pointing this out, Danae!

I just want to point out that you need to make sure your piece of fabric is wide enough. The flannel at my local fabric store comes in bolts about 40in wide, which is not near wide enough fold in half and make pants for my husband, thin though he is. I'll have to lay the piece I have out flat and cut out one leg, then go back and buy another piece of fabric to make the other. Super bummed I didn't think of that when I read through the tutorial before I bought my fabric!

3/4" is what I use. Part of it will depend how much bigger you trace your original pair of pants. I always go out about 2 inches and then use a 3/4 inch seam allowance. No one likes it when seams pop and the bigger seam allowance helps prevent them from ripping through when clothes get tugged and pulled on.

I am new to sewing and I am making these pants for my son for Christmas. I already have my material cut, but I am not sure what seam allowance I need to use for these pants. Anything I have made up to this point has been home decor sewing and the seam allowance was 1/4" but not sure if it is the same for clothing. Thanks so much.

Oh Marge, you're such a great grandma to keep trying! I have tried making pajamas for my husband for three years and only once did they come out alright. He is pretty particular about the way the fabric lays, how thick it is and he wants pockets. My last attempt was atrocious and I can always tell when he's running out of clean clothes because those are the pants he puts on! After my last attempt, I've given up and just buy him sweatpants and put heat transfer vinyl on them to personalize them for him! I know how frustrating it can be when your projects don't turn out the way they should!

Thanks for sharing your fun story! I hope this pair goes better and fits like magic. Good luck!

Hi:
I have made these twice for my Granddaughter. The first time, I had a pair of older pants and used those because she was not with me at the time. I was excited to give them to her. The crotch was too short and the legs also, they ended up being capri pants. She liked them and wore them twice. She said her butt hurt and she couldn't wear them. I made a second pair using a pair of pants she could wear. They were flannel with a pink background and cute black penguins on skis. I gave them to her when we went to our cabin. She couldn't get her foot in the bottom of the leg. I guess I shouldn't have used her stretch leggings as a pattern!! I am trying another shot at these and using her oversized school sweats for a pattern.
Thought my story would give you a smile for the day!!
