Kid’s Science Experiment Kit

This has been sitting in my draft folder FOREVER just waiting for some photos… I FINALLY got the pictures taken and uploaded.  So, here it is!  FINALLY!  Enjoy.

KID’S SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
& ART PROJECT KIT

Kid's Science and Art Kit

For Little Monkey’s 3rd birthday – yeah, WAAAAAAY back last July – I made him a Science Experiment Kit, complete with a project book.  The boy loves to get his hands dirty (as long as it’s not in food) and is so dang curious he drives me crazy with all the ‘why?’s.  It makes Mr. Napping a little nuts as well.  I wanted something that he would enjoy, but also something that would entertain him for more than a week or two.  We have tons of toys and a lot of them just sit on the floor until they get stepped on and kicked aside.  I didn’t want more “stuff”.  We have done small experiments over the past few years, starting with the baking soda and vinegar volcanoes.  That was cool, but Little Monkey was a bit too small to really enjoy it at the time.  We experimented with water beads last January and that was fun, until Little Monkey thought ripping them apart was the new fun thing.  Then they went bye-bye for a while…

Anyway.  I went through my Pinterest boards and Google and gathered any and all ideas that were science projects or demonstrations and a few art projects as well.  I typed up the basic instructions and an easy-to-understand explanation (at least easy-to-me, so I can explain it later) and printed it off.  Sounds easy, but I spent several hours (think, like over 30 hours) putting it all together.  Then I went down the ingredient list for each project and made a shopping list.  There were several projects that used at least some of the same ingredients (Borax, baking soda, corn starch, and glue, to name a few) so the shopping wasn’t horribly expensive – most of those are pretty cheap anyway.  I put it all in a big box with the printed project book and wrapped it with a nice big strip of tape, because I’m super classy like that.

This has been fantastic as we have started Little Monkey School and during the days when I think I’m going to strangle the kid.  He usually just needs a little structure and attention.  We’ve had fun and made some cool projects together.  It was definitely worth the time and minimal cost.  It has turned out to be a great gift that is enjoyed by both of us (and sometimes Daddy, too!) with some educational value to it as well.

Download your own copy of the Project Book from HERE.  It’s a link to my shared files on copy.com.  I haven’t ever had any complaints or problems with this site, but if you do, please let me know.  Or you can email me at {whilehewasnapping}at{gmail}dot{com} or leave your email address in the comments with a request for this file and I will email you a copy as soon as I can.  You can then download it from your email.

{If you’d like to know more about Copy and their awesome cloud storage, instant upload and automatic back up and syncing features – never worry about losing your mobile photos, even if your phone is lost or stolen – you can check out this post or head over here to get the info from the source.}

Print it out and then you’ll be well on your way to creating your own Science Experiment Kit.  If you find formatting issues, let me know.  I’ve tried to check and make sure all is well, but it’s a lot of pages and I’m not perfect.  Because a lot of these projects are inspired by other bloggers, this is FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY.  Do not sell, alter or edit, or sell alterations of this book.  Please do not post the book anywhere else.  If you would like to tell others about this book, please link them back to this post – not the download page.  Deal?  Mm-kay, thanks.  And those 30+ hours I spent putting this together thank you too.  Seriously, though.  Please play nice.

And, to help simplify things for you, I’ve made out a materials list below.  Not everything is included, but what I left out are things that most people have on hand around the home, water, ice cube trays and muffin tins, for example.

Materials you will need in your kit:
–  Baking soda
–  White vinegar
–  Food coloring
–  Bar of Ivory brand soap
–  Balloons
–  Borax
–  Cornstarch
–  White glue
–  Craft sticks (popsicle sticks)
–  Ruler
–  Vegetable Oil
–  Alka-Seltzer
–  Flashlight
–  Clear Glue or Corn Syrup
–  Ultra Fine Glitter
–  Shampoo or Hair Gel
–  Dice
–  Marbles
–  Glow Sticks
–  Glow in the Dark Paint
–  Paper Clips
–  Pipe Cleaners
–  Small Nuts and Bolts
–  Magnets
–  Sand
–  Small Shells
–  Baby Oil
–  Colored Candle Wax
–  Flour
–  Salt
–  Shaving Cream
–  Sweetened Condensed Milk
–  Liquid Dish Soap
–  Jello
–  Nonfat Dry Milk
–  Peanut Butter
–  Honey
–  Crayons
–  Cola
–  Mentos
–  Polystyrene Beads

Most of these are used in more than one project or experiment.  Check out the book and choose what projects you want to include in your kit and make your shopping list from there.  I think I spent about $23 on supplies, but I had a lot of it already.  Cut costs by choosing a few experiments and just getting those supplies.  I did get a new container of corn starch and some of the other kitchen supplies and ingredients so that Monkey and I have his own stash to pull from when we do experiments instead of hoping I remember to replace it in the kitchen.

Project Organize Your Entire Life

If you missed the post earlier this morning about my New Year’s theme resolution, you can get all caught up on it HERE.  If you don’t want to read about our Christmas, skip down to the last paragraph.  My first step in Project: Get Organized and Find Order was to come up with a game plan.  I have a really bad tendency to overload myself with projects and to-do lists and then I suffer burn out and disappointment, followed by lack of motivation because I never seem to get anything done!

Over at Modern Parents Messy Kids, Stephanie felt similarly one night in early spring last year and wrote an amazing post about how she had tamed her demons, her house was perfectly organized, her chore schedule was planned to a T, and her menu plan never failed.  Her children has reliable routines and her life was in complete harmony.  And then she admitted it was all a dream, but Project Organize Your Entire Life had been born.  It was a worldwide phenomena that spread like wide fire!  Apparently, there are lots of people craving order who don’t quite know how to get it.  I know that’s the boat I am in.

Stephanie has since been putting together an e-book on where to start in order to achieve more order in your life.  Total score, right?  I’ve started working my way through the pages and, let me tell you, it’s a fabulous collection of hints and helpful tips on where to start your journey to organization and order.  I am loving the section on toy rotation.  That is one of the first things I want to implement into our new routine.  Less toys in the house means less mess to clean up and less to trip over when I get Gator’s middle-of-the-night bottle.  Besides, my kids have some GREAT toys, but they have so many that they never spend much time with any one thing – leading to more mess (what 10.5 month-old cleans up after himself?!) and less quality play time.  I’ll let you in on how I’m going to do all this soon…

If you too have made the resolution to de-clutter and organize this year, you gotta check this out.  Stephanie has a sweet deal going on today!  If you’d like to try out POYEL: The Quick Start Guide, it is available now!  There was a great little part about her first project.  The laundry room of all places.  But it was something she could get accomplished while her little one napped one afternoon.  For a while, it was her happy place, even though no one else saw it regularly.  But, the best part of this guide is that she answers the question, “Where do I start?”  That is one of the hardest parts, for me anyway.

You can get POYEL: The Quick Start Guide in PDF form or try out the Kindle version.  It normally costs $6.99, but if you order before 12:59 EST on December 31, 2012 with the code “early” you can save an extra 25%!  Total deal, just saying.

Well, I’m off to do some toy sorting… and buy some storage totes…  woo, what a par-tay, right?!  Happy New Year!  (Be safe!)  And bring it, 2013!  I’m ready!

Bring in the New, Simple and Orderly

Ugh, sorry for being MIA last week.  I had planned about three posts for after Christmas, figuring it wouldn’t be so crazy and hectic.  Ha ha ha, right?!  We had a bug sweep through our ranks and I went from taking care of the sickies to being one!  Bleh, I hate being sick.  And poor Little Gator was sick his first Christmas.  Lame.

Speaking of Christmas, I hope yours was amazing.  If not Christmas, then whatever holiday you celebrate.  I hope it all was awesome.  I made out like a bandit when Mr. Napping Santa scored a sweeet deal on my new LAPTOP!  It’s faster, slimmer, lighter and just all around awesome, although the different keyboard style is giving me a little trouble.  Even so, I’m a lucky girl.  Thanks, Santa!

We also took some time to enjoy the snow we’ve gotten, both in the valley and up in the gorgeous mountains.  Mr and Monkey built a snowman in the front yard to greet all the family and neighbors.  We also got to tag along on one of Mr’s work trips to California.  We played in the snow while he did his lame, boring work.  Unfortunately, I left my phone in the car and didn’t get ANY pictures.  Sad, right?  Guess we’ll have to make another trip up there again soon.

A few days ago I asked about New Year’s resolutions on my Facebook page.  One of the responses I got was totally awesome.  Instead of making specific resolutions, set a theme for the year.  I LOVE this idea.  I can set goals, but not have the pressure of missed deadlines or failures.  Rather, I can focus on and celebrate the victories.  So, this year my resolution is GET ORGANIZED and FIND ORDER.  So, here’s to de-cluttering, simplifying, organizing and finding order in my home, my blog, my relationships, my consumerism and intake into my home, my little Etsy store, my children and their activities, my family and our time together.  I’m going to be all about menu planning, toy rotation, little bins and baskets, pre-scheduled blog posts and printable lists and schedules.  It will probably take the whole entire year to make a dent in our crazy lives, but I’m going to try.  So, out with the old, in with the new, simple and orderly.  2013, I’m ready for you!

Are you with me?!

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
