Autumn Subway Art Printable

So, it still gets up into the 90’s here everyday.  We still put the sunshades up in the windshield and we’re still leaving the car windows cracked when we go into the store.  Flip flops and t-shirts are still the uniform of casual wear.  My boots and scarves and hats are still packed away in their boxes.  Even so, autumn (and winter) will be here before ya know it, so in order to get things kicked off on the right foot…

I Heart You Plaque

I have two wedding days.  Actually, one is a sealing day.  My family is LDS and two years ago we became an eternal family.  It was a long-awaited day and one that was full of every emotion on the face of the planet.  I was a new, sleep-deprived mother and was so overwhelmed.  What a long day that was.  But it was such a great day.  One that deserves to be remembered.

I haven’t posted a whole lot of romance ideas since February.  We got busy with life, work and summer and our date nights took a bit of a hit, but with this anniversary, it seems like a good time to put a few of my ideas out there.

Here’s a fun little gift.  It was inexpensive and, as I’m sure you know by now, I love me some personalization!  It’s basically self-explanatory, so I don’t really have a tutorial for it.  A wood burning kit, a steady hand and a big bucketful of patience was all it took.  Well, and my rice bag at bed time (my back was awfully sore from bending over the counter for so long).  Obviously, my husband’s name is in the little blacked out spot… sorry, but privacy is worth something.

I started out by drawing my design lightly with pencil.  Then I used the heat iron and burned my design into the wood.  I’d never done any wood burning before (unless you count campfires), so I did a little flying by the seat of my pants and on-the-job training.  Or experimenting.  Whatever.  In any case, I really love the way it turned out.  I sure hope My Mr. Right does too…

pic 1  I included two dates on our plaque.  Our wedding date and our sealing date.

If you’re interested in purchasing one of these little cuties, you may do so in my Etsy shop.  Of course, it will come with your details, not mine.  You may also consider this for a father’s, mother’s, or grandparents gift with the names of your family/kids or the grandkids.

Printable Lunch Notes

I hope everyone had a great three day weekend and that you got one last hoorah of the summer in before school and the rest of your routines take over.  We celebrated our 2nd sealing anniversary today and were able to spend the whole weekend together.  Unfortunately, My Mr. Right brought home a lovely cold and has been so kind as to share with me.  Other than that, though, it’s been fantastic!

I hate when I make up a printable and then forget to post it!  Gah.  So, sorry these are a bit late, but school is still in session and you can still use them.  I hope.

My mom used to put little notes on my lunch bag until after I was in high school… Secretly, I loved it.  Although, I’d never have shown them to my friends or admitted that I liked it.  Kids.  Hahaha..  But, even these many years later (not a ton of years, but more than five…) I still have a few of those notes tucked away in my “Mementos” box.

Weekend Wander #45

Welcome Friends!  I want to give a quick shout out to everyone who left their congratulations to our big news!  Thank you!  My posting frequency might take a little bit of a hit, but I still have some fun stuff planned in the next few months.  It just might take me longer to get it all together than it normally would.  So, please stick around!

Ok, let’s get to the party!  A few features from last week:

I had to share this one from Taidye Designs.  I’m glad I’m not the only one that think of romance this way.  I’m corny and lame when it comes to romance (don’t believe me, check out the ABC’s of Love series) and My Mr. Right always indulges me and plays along.

Check out this oopsy-turned-fabulous over at Newlyweds on a Budget.  Kari took a project she tried (but didn’t like the end result… don’t you hate when that happens?!) and turned it in to this too cute canvas.  What a great way to make the best of a not-so-great project (although, for the record, I thought the original project was cute too).  P.S. Kari, I LOVE the texture!

You’ll never guess what these ADORABLE votive displays are made out of!  Seriously.  Head over to Burton Avenue and check it out.  These are amazing!

The beach is my happy place.  It just amazes me how beaches are so different, yet it’s just sand and water.  I don’t know if it’s the soothing sound of the waves or what, but I always feel so peaceful at the beach.  One Artsy Mama shares some incredibly cool ways to get a little of the beach right at home, even when you’re totally landlocked (like me).

I wish I had time to feature more, there were so many cool things linked up last week!  If you didn’t get to check it out, I highly suggest you check it out.  Thanks for sharing, if you were featured, feel free to grab a featured button from the side bar.

And for this week…  You know the rules.  Family friendly links only and no commercial sites, please.  Also, stick around and mingle a little.  Check out some of the other cool stuff.  Don’t be a wallflower!  It’s a party!

Picture Frame to DIY Canvas

One day, My Mr. Right found a whole box of picture frames on Craigslist, in the free section no less.  He grabbed them for me.  Because I’m a lucky girl like that… who needs flowers, right?  I’d rather have craft supplies any day.  Well, as to be expected, there was a reason the frames were free.  They weren’t totally trashed but had definitely outlived the stage of being an actually picture frame.  I hung on to them because, well, I’m a packrat.  It’s a genetic disease, it’s not my fault.  I got it from both my mom and dad.  I knew, eventually, I’d figure out something to do with them though.

After I made my Crate & Barrel inspired knock off lantern out of Dollar Tree picture frames, I got to brainstorming what else I could do with my box of frames.  Yes, I have an entire box of nothing but picture frames.  No pictures in them or nothin’!  We’re talking about a banana box from the grocery store… Total waste of space in front of my dresser.  And it makes it kinda hard to get into the dresser…  So, I got to brainstorming.  I had a canvas drop cloth that I had originally planned to make curtains out of, but when I found black out panels at the thrift store for $3 a piece I scrapped that idea.  The drop cloth was two times that expensive and all I had to do with the panels was hang them.  It was a done deal.  But, I never returned the drop cloth.

I’m really loving the canvas gallery wall look right now, but pre-stretched canvases can be expensive if you’re trying to create a whole wall.  So… I created my own.

You’ll Need:
– Picture Frames
– A Staple Gun
– Staples
– Iron
– Canvas Drop Cloth
2011-08-22_10-57-05_845
Here’s the How:
1)  I took two 8×10 picture frames that were identical, even down to the way they were losing their finish.  I used LocTite glue and glued them together so that the front of the frames were touching.  I set some heavy books {my box of} scrapbook paper on top of the frames and let them dry overnight.  I also grabbed a couple of identical 8×10” and didn’t glue them together.  Both worked, it just depends on how thick you want your canvas to be.
2)  I spread out the drop cloth and laid the     frames on top of it.  I cut around the frames, leaving enough excess to pull the fabric around the frame and to the back.
2011-08-22_10-58-16_19
3)  Iron the canvas.  You’ll be sorry if you don’t.  Trust me.
4)  Lay your frames back on top of the canvas.  Pull it tightly, as tight as you can, around the frame and use a staple gun to secure it to the back.  I folded the unfinished edges under, to help prevent fraying.  You could also Fray-Check it.  Continue until you have secured all four sides.  You’ll have to play with the corners a bit to get them to lay nicely.
2011-08-22_10-58-16_192011-08-22_10-59-34_2532011-08-22_11-05-16_2242011-08-22_11-07-12_7122011-08-22_11-11-29_5372011-08-22_11-11-53_5642011-08-22_11-14-07_507

Trim the edges of the canvas if you want to.  If you do that, make sure you fray check or super glue around the staples so your canvas doesn’t tear free of the frame.

Turn it over and decide what you’re going to decorate it with.  A photo, paper, vinyl… the sky, and your creativity, are the limits.  Bask in the thought of your own canvas on the cheap.
         2011-08-22_11-14-23_413  2011-08-22_11-15-14_184
This project was free for me (except the box of staples I had to buy for the staple gun – $3 for 1250 staples, that’s A LOT of canvases).  If you have to purchase everything you may be better off buying canvases on sale at the craft store.  I used a HUGE (6×9’) drop cloth that set me back $10, but I bought it several months ago and never returned it so it was just sitting in my craft stash.  I also have some other plans for it too.    Use a smaller cloth if you try this.  Unless you plan to make several or grab some friends and split the cost.  (A 6×9’ cloth will give you approximately ten 16×20” canvases).

Happy decorating!

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
