Keep It Clean: In The Kitchen

It seems that cleaning is a never-ending task.  Right?  I swear I spend two hours cleaning the kitchen and you’d have no idea a day or two later.  It doesn’t help that our kitchen is right inside the front door.  So, when things get brought it… they often get dropped in there.  So, I started a new… routine, we’ll call it.  Instead of spending two hours every three days cleaning, how about twenty minutes each day?  That cuts my cleaning time in half.

In the last week I have discovered some tips and tricks.  Besides falling in love with vinegar all over again, there are a few more secrets.  So, pull out your notebooks and pens and get ready to take notes.  Or click on the title of this post and then click the print button located right above it.  Easy peasy, yeah?

10 Secrets to a Clean Kitchen:
1)  I really HATE smelly sponges, but when you’re cleaning they are kind of a necessity.  Paper towels are expensive when you go through them at a rate of three or four a day.  Dish cloths have the same smelly issues, although you can throw those in the washer.  But a dish cloth or two a day adds up quick!  I don’t have a ton of time to add a ton of laundry to my to-do list.  So… after you are done with your cleaning for the day, put the sponge on a saucer and put it in the microwave for about 1 minute.  More or less, depending on the power of your microwave oven.  When you see steam you can stop it.  Please make sure there is no metal in your sponge before placing it in the microwave.  Take it out very carefully, it will be HOT!  When it is cool, wash it thoroughly with a little dish washing soap.  Set it out to dry.  Let dry thoroughly.

2)  My passion for pasta is no secret.  But I am not fond of stained plastic ware.  Nothing makes Tupperware, or Snap ware in my case, look gross and dirty like a permanent stain.  So, to prevent red sauces from staining my containers, I lightly coat the plastic with olive oil (you can use any kind of edible oil) before I put my leftovers in.  The oil protects the container and prevents the plastic from soaking in the color.
3)  We have granite counter tops.  Awesome.  We have tile granite counter tops.  Not so awesome… because the grout gets gross.  Fast.  Water stains or stains from food or other sources make our counters look yucky and dirty.  I combat this with a bleach pen.  Just draw it on, let it sit for ten minutes and wipe it off.  TA-DA!  Good as new.

4)  With dirty diapers in the house, we can sometimes get some really bad odors hanging around.  No matter how many bags we wrap it in.  So, to help tame the smell, I sprinkle a 1/4 cup of baking soda in the bottom of the trash liner.  If I notice a really foul stench, I’ll add a little more as the liner gets full.  Just dump it in on top.  A small bowl of vinegar under the sink helps curtail the smell too.
5)  Don’t forget to wipe down the surface of your cupboards and drawers.  Especially the ones in front of the sink.  Things spill easily while you’re washing up dishes.  Pay attention to the handles too.  Grime builds up quick with a myriad of hands touching those surfaces.  While you’re at it, wipe down the dishwasher and the oven.  Take a quick swipe at the fridge too, if it’s looking dingy.  If the visible surfaces are dirty and dingy, it will be assumed the insides are too.  First impressions are important.

6)  Cleaning and disinfecting cutting boards is essential to safe food preparation.  For things like fruits, vegetables, breads and most other foods simple soap and hot water will suffice.  Wiping it down with vinegar will provide a safe disinfectant.  If you cut meats or poultry on it, you will want to let the cutting board sit in a solution of 1 part chlorine beach to 10 parts water.  Let it sit for ten minutes, rinse and allow to air dry.
7)  You can deodorize kitchen surfaces with lemon juice.  Juice 5-10 lemons, depending on the size of the surface you’re deodorizing.  Or just buy a bottle of lemon juice.  Pour the juice into a spray bottle.  Lightly spray your surfaces and let it sit for 10-20 minutes.  Wipe down the surface with a clean, damp cloth or sponge.  Also works well with cutting boards.

8)  Clutter.  This is a huge problem for us.  My Mr Right and I have chronic cases of “Dropsy”.  We come in the door and drop everything on the countertops.  Don’t do this!  It will make even the cleanest room look messy.  Also, try not to store a lot of things on your counter tops.  We have very limited storage space, so some things (Like our KitchenAid) have a permanent home on the counter.  Keep this to a minimum.  It will, more often than not, look like you didn’t put anything away.
9)  Clean from top to bottom and from one side of the room to the other.  That way you won’t waste time wiping down a counter that you wiped down ten minutes ago.  It will also help keep clutter from creeping back in while you clean.
10)  Keep your dishwasher empty so you can load dirty dishes right into it.  A sink full of dirty dishes will always make a kitchen look messy.  This is easier said than done, I know.  Train your family to load their dishes into the dishwasher, instead of dropping them in the sink or one the counter, when they are done with them.  It may take a few days (or weeks…) but will be so worth it in the end, promise.  That saves me at least ten minutes a day in the kitchen.35

11)  If it isn’t dirty, DON’T CLEAN IT!  Seems simple enough, right?  I don’t clean out the fridge every day.  Every couple of days is good enough.  I do the dishes everyday when My Mr Right is home; but when he’s not, every two or three days is good enough.  Little Monkey and I cook more simply and eat less when he’s not here.  So we dirty dishes more slowly.  No need to run half a load of dishes, just wait another day.

Blogging: Creating Category Pages

I had an email requesting a tutorial on how to make category pages.  Probably the simplest way to do this is with labels.  This is the way I do it.  Doing it this way, your pages will update when you write a new post.  Blogger’s pages feature is nice, but it only allows for static pages.  With labels and a link your page will update itself.  Let’s get started.

Here’s the How:
1)  It all begins when you write up your post.  If you don’t already, begin labeling your posts.  You don’t need a ton of labels.  One or two will do.  The more labels you have the more pages your post will show up on.  If you are going to create pages with your labels, be general.  You won’t need labels of both “drinks” and “beverages”.  Pick one.  I am currently, and always, trying to whittle down my labels.

2)  After you publish your post, view it on your blog.  At the bottom of the post, if you have labels enabled to show, your labels will show up.  Click on the one you want to make a page from.

3.  Now, you’ve clicked on the label you are going to use and it should pull up a page that has all the posts that you’ve labeled with that label.  Highlight the address in the address bar.

4.  You will now need to create a link.  There are a couple ways to do this.  You will need to decide if you want a text link or an image link.  Text links are the easiest to make.
Copy this text and replace the red text with your text.
<a href=”http://URL address.com“>word(s) you want be linked</a>
Example:
<a href=”http://whilehewasnapping.blogspot.com/search/label/main%20dish”>Main Dish</a>

The code will make a link that looks like this:
Main Dish

This is an awesome tutorial on creating a navigation bar instead of just a link, which would be very helpful to your readers in locating your content.  If you want an image in your navigation bar, check out this tutorial.

5.  If you opt to just create links, make a list of them down your sidebar or something like that.  If you put them at the top of your blog, make the font a little larger so people realize it’s a navigation bar.

I hope this all made sense.  If not, let me know and I’ll clarify.  Good Luck!

Poppin’ Peepers

Want your eyes to make a statement?  Follow these tips:
1)  Curl your eyelashes.  If you’re applying your make up first thing in the morning, curl them before you apply any mascara.  For extra hold, heat your eyelash curler with your blow dryer for a few seconds.  Make sure it’s not too hot before you clamp onto those upper lashes. Curled lashes will make your eyes appear more open.

2)  As far as mascara on the lower lashes… it depends on your eyes.  Some eyes it actually closes off and makes them look smaller.  Some it creates a dramatic effect that makes your eyes stand out.  You’ll have to try it to find out.Use one to two coats of mascara.  If you want a little more adventurous or playful look use a colored liner or mascara, like dark blue, green, purple.
3)  False lashes are an option.  Take your time playing with them if you’ve never worn them before.  Practice your application technique.  Only apply them to the outside half of your own lashes and use a good glue.
4)  Invest in a good white shadow.  Or a couple of them.  Shimmery white will be your best friend…  After you have applied your shadow and before your last coat of mascara, sweep a bit of white shadow right below your brows and in the corner of your eye.  Extend it under your bottom lashes.  Use it as a highlighter… not a color.  Using it as a color makes your face look washed out and clownish.

Yes

No

5)  Keep your eyebrows groomed.  If you are not comfortable doing it yourself the first time, go have it done professionally.  Then, you can do the upkeep.  If you do it yourself, here are some guidelines to follow.  Your brows should start at the inside corner of your eye.  Take a Q-Tip to help you follow a straight line.  Hold one end of the Q-Tip next to your nostril, pointing up.  Your brows should begin here.

Drag the other end of the Q-Tip over your brow.  The arch of your brow should be at the point where the Q-Tip crosses in front of your pupil when you look straight ahead.

The end of your brow should be where the other end sits right under your eye.

6)  Don’t apply eyeliner all the way around your eye.  It will close them off and make them look smaller.  On the bottom lashes, apply liner below the lashes and start where your lashes begin.  Extend your liner out passed your eye just slightly and in a slightly upward slant.  But, be careful.  If it isn’t symmetrical, your eyes can look lopsided.  On the upper lashes, begin the liner in about the same spot as you did on the bottom lashes.  Apply the liner as close to the lashes as you can.  You may want to apply a white or shimmery silver to your waterline (inside the bottom lashes).  Don’t attempt this unless you are somewhat accustomed to and comfortable with objects close to your eye.

Note the shimmery white liner and the black liner.

7)  Conceal any baggy, saggy or dark circles.  Circles will deter attention from those pretty peepers.  Find a good concealer and use it for those days when you need a little extra coverage (like those nights when you’re up every two hours with a sick baby…)
8)  Black mascara will be more dramatic and noticeable than brown.  Apply one coat and let it dry.  When it’s dry, dab more mascara on the tips of your lashes.  This will make them appear longer.  Go slowly and apply it in small quantities.  If you don’t, it will clump.  Yuck.
9)  With your liner, start with a skinny line and get thicker as you get closer to the outer corner of your eye.  Use a thin line on your lower lash line.
10)  Wear an eyeshadow color that will make your eyes pop:

blue eyes– blue shades will enhance your eye color while brown shades will draw attention to them because of the color contrast.  Combine colors is a great idea.

green eyes– green shades can help enhance the color, but use moderation.  Purples, golds, and shimmery light browns will draw attention to those pretty greens.

hazel– hazel eyes are fun because they can appear to change colors based on the amount of light, the environment, and the eye make up you sport.  I love having hazel eyes.  Purple will bring out the gold and green tones in your eyes.  Black or gray (such as a smoky eye) will bring out gold.  Browns, pinks and lighter neutrals will bring out the brown.  Shades with a silvery or shimmery tint will bring out the green.

brown eyes– charcoals and mauves will make your eyes bright and inviting.  Blacks and golds enhance the color of your irises and brighten up tired eyes.  They are complimentary for fair skin toned ladies too.  Gray and taupe are great day wear colors.  Green and golds are great night wear colors to pop those chocolate beauties.

Go, flash those big, beautiful baby blues… or greens, or hazels, whatever you’ve been blessed with.  Go get ‘em, Gorgeous!

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
