Spring Fling: 14 Days of Fabulous Giveaways

Ok, you may have noticed over in my sidebar a cute little button that looks like this:

What’s this all about?  Well, let me tell you.  But, you better sit down first!  It’s pretty big!  Are you sitting?  Oh, most people sit when they are on the computer… well, then let’s get to this.  You may remember a couple months ago I sponsored a giveaway over at Wildflowers and Whimsy?  Well, April was an awesome host!  When I got an email that she was hoping to get a giveaway event put together, I was on board.  I love giving stuff away… if only my budget liked it too.  Anyways….. sorry, got side-tracked.  Well, I wasn’t the only one on board… 24 other ladies jumped on board too!  That’s right, TWENTY-FIVE GIVEAWAYS!  IN 14 DAYS!

So, how do you score yourself some of this loot?  Well, starting on the 20th of March, there will be two blogs hosting a giveaway each day.  Each giveaway will be open for 3 days.  You may enter as many or as few of the giveaways as you’d like.  I will post each morning which blogs are hosting that day and what the loot is.  You will need to go to each blog to enter for their specific prize, as each sponsor is running their own giveaway.

How much fun will this be?!?  It’s gonna be a blast!  I don’t know yet what the other ladies have chosen as their prizes, but I know that mine turned out pretty cute…  So, grab yourself a button as a reminder to come and enter for your chance at some awesome prizes.  Post your button to let others know about this event.  April has worked hard getting everything organized, so help her get the word out about this.  Thanks!  And GOOD LUCK!

Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Ok, I know there are still snow drifts of varying heights all over the country, but any day is a good day for home made ice cream in my book.  Last week we tried a new recipe.  My Mr. Right’s favorite ice cream flavor in Mint Chocolate Chip and, while digging around in the black hole my family calls a garage, he found an ice cream maker.  Of course, we didn’t have the patience to wait for warmer weather.  So, here is the Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream we tried.  It turned out pretty tasty!

MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP ICE CREAM

Ingredients:
2 cups Whole Milk
2 cups Heavy Cream
1 cup Sugar
1/2 tsp Salt
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 tsp Mint Extract
5 drops of Green Food Color
1 cup Andes Mint Chips

Directions:
In a large bowl, stir together the milk, cream, sugar, salt, vanilla extract and peppermint extract until the sugar has dissolved. Color to your liking with the green food coloring, I used about 5 drops.  Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker, and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions. After about 10 minutes into the freezing, add the mint chips. If you’re going for soft-serve, you can eat it about 30 minutes later.  If you want a thicker, firmer ice cream, dish it into a container and freeze for a couple hours.

I actually found this recipe at allrecipes.com.  We tweaked it a bit and it worked out well.

Spring Candles

So, what did you think of the carved candles?  Has anyone tried it yet?  If so, I’d love to see yours.

Now, I’m gonna show ya how to embellish candles using rose petals and other springy flora.  It’s easy and nearly free if you turn to the outdoors for your inspiration and supplies.

Here’s the How:
1)  You will need candles and something to put on them.  In theory, you could use just about anything.  I suggest using things that are fairly flat (like rose petals, leaves and the like).  The more 3-D the objects the more wax you have to melt away to get your objects to stick.  Make sure your objects are still fresh.  My rose petals were past their prime and the dried, brittle edges were difficult to work with.
2)  If you have a heat gun, that will be your best option.  A blow dryer will work, but you’ll learn that lesson of patience you keep putting off or praying for (which ever the case may be, the latter in my case).  I don’t have a heat gun, so it was the blow dryer for me.   Decide on a layout for your candle.  My ivory candle has petals and leaves all the way around.  The white one just has the five leaves on it.
3)  Use your heat gun or blow dryer to melt the wax just enough to mold your objects into your candle.  If the wax gets drippy, you can trim it off with an Exacto knife and smooth the wax out with your fingers and firm, but slight, pressure.
4)  There were a few times I couldn’t get my wax to melt sufficiently.  I used some Tacky glue (My glue of choice for most projects) and glued the edges down.  I actually used just Tacky glue on two or three of the petals and leaves.  No melting.  They are sticking wonderfully.  Let dry completely.

Side Note:  Don’t put candles in the microwave… (Yes, I tried putting my candles in the microwave.  No, nothing major happened.  However, in hind sight, probably not a very wise thing to do)…  Live and learn, yeah?  Back to the candles.

For the white candle, I used my hot glue gun.  Yeah, I share the same attention span and patience of my 19-month-old.  I just squirted glue on my leaves and stuck them to the candle.  The hot glue helped melt the wax and they stuck really well.  I did try to glue a stick in between the leaves… It didn’t stick well and I then decided to just use the tip of my glue gun to melt the wax away and leave a gaping hole canyon for a little more dimension to the design.  Just make sure you clean off your glue gun tip afterward!  =]

Well, grab those candles and start melting!  As always, I’d love to see your creations!  Good luck!

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
