12 Days til Christmas: Personalized Sign and Chalkboard

I have a cousin, my very bestest cousin actually, and she is going to be a teacher.  She graduates next May.  So, for their Christmas gift I decided to give all her hard work a little shout out!

This sign is personalized with a name and wedding date.  I think everyone should have one something that shouts out how long they’ve been married to the love of their lives.  It’s also got a section painted with chalkboard paint for them to write messages or grocery lists or whatever.

How to make this:

1) I used a piece of 1″x6″x24″ for this project.  I primed the board and then spray painted it red.  After I was satisfied with the shade of red, I applied a thin layer of modge podge.  This step isn’t really necessary, but that’s what I did.

2)  After it was super dry (like a night and a day spent drying) I used masking tape to mark off a 10″ area of the board.  I then painted inside the tape with chalkboard paint.  It took about three coats of that to get it to cover sufficiently.  As a side note, before you complete this step, make sure you are doing it on the end of the board that is the smoothest.  Or take the time to fill some of the imperfections in your wood before you paint it.  I had plans to use the smooth end and then somewhere along the way the board got flipped and the wrong end got painted with the chalkboard paint.  It was kind of lame, but I didn’t have time to redo it before we had to deliver it.

3)  Then I used white vinyl to cut their name and wedding date out.  It was self-adhesive so it was super easy to get it to stick.  IF you have already laid down a layer of modge podge, or even the paint, be careful with your transfer medium so it doesn’t pull that up.  I had a spot that stuck.  It wasn’t noticable to the normal person.  My Mr Right noticed it, but he’s oober observant.  I can’t ever hide anything from him!  He’s also a perfectionist and was also just as disappointed that the board had gotten flipped and the chalkboard painted on the wrong end.  Anyway.  Cover all of that with another layer or two (or three) of modge podge.  If it had been warmer, I probably would have sprayed it with a clear sealant too.  But, I opted to forgo spraying paint fumes in the house…

Oh, and if I’d had more time, I would have either sanded out a little dish on the top of the board or drilled a diagonal hole on the side for the chalk to sit in.  But I didn’t.  Maybe you will.  I just said “Merry Christmas, sorry, but you’ll have to figure out what to do with the chalk.”

Ok, if I gave you this gift, stop reading…  Thanks!  =]

Time:  About two hours spent priming, painting and cutting out the vinyl.  This was super easy to put together, but it did need to be done in stages.
Cost:  This was another piece of my 1″x6″ board.  It was less than a dollar for this piece.  I did buy spray paint (it was actually for another project but didn’t get used on that, so I used it on this).  That was about $1 worth of paint.  The primer was less than a dollar’s worth.  I already had the vinyl.  And the chalkboard paint I got at Wal-Mart for $2, but I didn’t use all of it.  I would put this project around $5-7.

Two down… and a whole long list to go.

12 Days Til Christmas: International Christmas Wishes

This week’s printable is a reminder that this is one time out of the whole year that people from all around the world come together and celebrate this time of the year.  Not all the celebrations are the same or even celebrating the same thing, but seriously, how often does the whole world get together and celebrate?  We all get caught up in life and sometimes forget that there are reasons to celebrate.  I’m totally guilty.  But, this is one reason I love Christmas so much.

Weekend Wander #8 Features

It seems I’m always a day late and a dollar short.  This is no exception.  Here are the feature’s from last weekend’s link party:

How great is this wreath that Michelle over at Polka Dots and Pizza made?  It’s too cute and you won’t believe how easy!  Definitely on my “to-do list”!
Would you look at this Advent Calendar that Holly at Hallelujahs by Holly whipped up!  I love the PB inspired things, especially when I see them being done FAR below PB prices!
Is this not the cutest candle holder?  In LOVE!  And the smell of cinnamon sticks all day long… ah, heaven!  Come find out how to make your own over at Wingledings!  Also, on my project list.  Boy, that list is getting awfully long.
Can I just say, Oh my heck, I WANT one of these.  Actually, I want several.  Check out these chocolate scented Kiss soaps over at Closet Crafter!  Diana did an amazing job.  If only I was on her Christmas list…
Ok, I try not to feature the same people week after week, but Kyra at Racks and Mooby must be on my same craft frequency or something.  I’m ALWAYS smitten by her projects.  She did something similar to this for Halloween, but I love the snowflakes!  So pretty!  She also did an awesome post on organizing your kiddos toys.  But seriously, how many times can I possibly feature this girl!?!  Keep ’em coming, Kyra!  I love it!
Grab a featured button from the sidebar!
And thanks to everyone else who linked up too.  They were all awesome!  See you next week.

12 Days til Christmas: Homemade Chocolate Pudding

This isn’t necessarily a holiday only treat, it’s delish all year long. It’s one of my faves! Where did this recipe come from? Well, for Christmas the first year we were married, my awesome mother-in-law compiled all the recipes that float around all the different kitchen tables in the family (and some family friends) and organized them by category, typed them up, printed them out and filled up a binder with homemade goodness. Now, let me just explain that each binder is three inches thick, that’s right THREE inches! That’s a lot of homemade goodness! It’s, by far, my favorite cookbook. This recipe is from that cookbook. It can also be found in the cookbook There’s A Cow In The Kitchen.

HOMEMADE PUDDING RECIPE

Ingredients:
1/2 cup instant dry milk powder  (1/3 cup if using non-instant)
1 3/4 Cup water
1egg beaten
1 Tbsp butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp Cornstarch
3 Tbsp flour
1/2 Cup sugar

Directions:

Bring 1 3/4 cups water to a boil.  Reduce heat and stir in the mixed dry ingredients.  Beat in the beaten egg and cook over low heat one minute.  Stir in butter and vanilla.  Cool in refrigerator.

Variations to basic pudding recipe:
Coconut:  Use 1 tsp coconut flavoring or use vanilla and stir in 1/2 cup shredded coconut.
Fruit:  Layer sliced or canned fruit over the pudding.
Butterscotch:  Substitute brown sugar for the white sugar and add an extra tablespoon of butter.  Add pecan pieces if desired.
Chocolate:  Add 2 Tbsp. extra sugar and 2 Tbsp. cocoa.
Eggnog:  Use 2 eggs for each 4 serving size.  Omit vanilla and add a dash of nutmeg and 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. rum flavoring.
Maple nut:  Use 1 tsp maple flavoring in place of vanilla.  Add chopped English Walnuts.  This is best made with brown sugar.

The chocolate is my favorite.  Hands down.  We eat it hot right off the stove with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (to help cool it to a tolerable temperature) and it’s to die for delish.  It’s really yummy without the strawberries too, but who doesn’t like chocolate covered strawberries?  I know those people do exist, but I’m soo not one of them.  The Egg Nog Version is one we enjoy during the holiday season.  It’s very yummy as well.  ENJOY!

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
