Big Sibling Kits {From the Baby}

So, you’re expecting a sweet new baby. Congratulations! But, do you have other children already? Are you worried about upsetting your family dynamic when your new babe is born? Because that dynamic WILL be turned upside and inside out. But, it’s okay. I’ve got something to help you make the transition while you figure out a new family dynamic: Big Sibling Kits.

When I first started putting together our Big Sibling Kits, I thought I had three to four weeks before my baby would be making his grand entrance. Plenty of time to get everything all made, constructed and organized and get this awesome post all written up to share.  And then life happened and our little man showed up Sunday afternoon. As in four days ago. Surprise!

So, instead of spending the last three days polishing up some fabulous Big Brother Kits for my older boys and an awesome post for Lisa at Mabey She Made It and Melanie at Craft Cupboard‘s fun series, I spent it snuggling with one of the cutest little dudes I know, popping pain killers right on schedule and explaining to my older boys for the billumteenth time that they need to tone down their hurricane force energy, wash their hands (yes, again!), and keep their kisses to the top of Baby Brother’s head. While I had intended to have the kits ready to go with my older boys to my mom’s while our new baby made his entrance into the world, that didn’t happen. But they’ve been a LIFESAVER over the past few days.

When my middle baby, Little J, was about to join our family I was concerned about how his big bro would handle the adjustment. There’s always some adjusting when a new member joins the family. So, this time, to help ease the change, I planned to give my older boys Big Brother Kits – from the baby.  You can’t hate someone who comes with presents, right?  Right?  Please let me be right…

BIG SIBLING KITS
Big Sibling Gifts from the New Baby

What’s Inside Our Big Sibling Kits?

Obviously, you should adapt these things to fit your kids’ needs and interests.  These are just to help give you some ideas if you decide to put together similar kits.  Of course, my list is based on young boys… that’s what I have.  My kids are both very active and ages 4.5 and 2.  Older kids or little girls might not want the same things.

**Please note, links in this post may be affiliate links. This means I will get a small portion of any purchase you make through the link. Your cost is not changed in any way and your support helps me keep this site running. I only recommend things I personally love and hope you will too. Thank you!

– Bubbles. Personally, I prefer a Bubble Machine (we like this one) since my kids aren’t old enough to blow the bubbles themselves.
– Puzzles. I found Dollar Tree had 24 piece puzzles in a variety of themes.  But I know my boys would love this giant undersea floor puzzle too).

– Books. We love Little Critter books and when I found “The New Baby” on Amazon, I got that for my boys.  We also love the Osborne touchy-feely books. There is one titled “That’s Not My Baby” but it was hard to find. I did eventually find a boy version on eBay. The Berenstein Bears also have a “New Baby” story that we enjoy.

– Snacks. I did get a little sweeter snacks than I normal give them on any one given day, but they’ll be with grandma, so why not, right? Turn the tables a little and let her see what it’s like when she sends my kids home with cookies and fruit snacks at 8pm… Only joking. Mostly.

– Coloring Books. I chose to get Color Wonder products. I really like these mini-markers because they fit in my little one’s hands so well. We use Color Wonder products a lot when we’re out and I love not having to worry about big messes! And there’s a huge variety of Color Wonder coloring books and paper to choose from.
– Felt Road. I first made this for Big J like two summers ago and he has loving played with it ever since. Now, both my boys love it! They can split up the track pieces or share them. Don’t forget to include a car or two for each kid too!

– Play dough. I usually make my own play dough because it’s so cheap and easy. But, when I buy play dough, I really love the Play-Doh party packs. They have just the right amount of dough for little hands, there’s lots of colors to choose from, and they come with their own containers.
– Sidewalk Chalk.  We’ve been having a pretty mild winter so far and the boys are loving the chance to play outside more than usual.  I found a set at Dollar Tree and split it between my two boys.  They like to draw with chalk on paper too.  Dip the chalk in water first before drawing for more vivid colors and less dust.
– Big Brother Shirts. Confession: I actually made these and that’s how we announced to Grandma and Grandpa that we were expecting another baby. My boys love their “brudder shirts”. No time or desire to make your own? That’s okay, here’s some cute big brother shirts and big sister shirts that will show up right on your doorstep. You don’t even have to put on pants!

– Printable Sandwich Shop.  This is more Big J’s speed, something he can do on the days he doesn’t feel like he needs to nap.  It’s totally cute and you can’t beat FREE.  Get your copy at Kid’s Activities Blog.
– Wooden or Paper Dolls.  I’ve done a few of these for Big J so we can practice sequencing (First, put on shirt, then pants, last is shoes) and familiarity with dressing himself.  Google “printable paper dolls” or find some super cute sets on Babalisme Blog.  I really like these ones, as they aren’t excessively girly. This wooden dress-up bear set is fun too. Little J likes that they are magnetic and easy to dress!
– Mini Experiment Kit.  This is a super toned-down version of the Kid’s Experiment Kit.  Basically, the experiments that take only a few minutes and minimal supplies.  Sparkle bottles or snow globes would also be a good project to do with preschoolers and early elementary aged kids, if you’ve got half an hour and the patience to deal with glitter.

– Story Tiles. These are the same idea as the story stones I made Big J, but smaller and, more importantly, lighter. Little J is going through a phase of throwing things. As long as your kiddo doesn’t put everything in their mouth, this is a great alternative.  You can use sharpies to draw on the tiles or get fancy with a woodburning tool.  I used Scrabble tiles, because I have a cupboard full.

– Memory Game.  I chose some photos from the past year or so and printed two copies of each.  Then I cut those out and glued them to scrapbook paper and laminated the cards.  I hole punched the cards and they can be stored on a binder ring.
– Personalized Go Fish Game.  You can play this game with the same cards you make for Memory.  Just deal them out instead of laying them face-down on the floor.  Then take turns trying to make matches.  Make simpler cards for your younger kiddos – a single photo of dad, mom, grandma, grandpa, etc rather than multiple photos with mom and dad in them.

I ended up putting mostly store bought items in our kits, and that’s perfectly fine. My boys thought they’d hit the jackpot with all the new goodies in their bags.  I had planned to do up cute little canvas bags with “Big Brother” on them – but instead I fell back on some bags we had around the house.

DIY Witch Hazel Wipes

It’s funny how different kids are, even siblings.  And even from a young age.  Of course, you expect their personalities to vary, but even down to diet preferences and medical problems and illnesses.  Big J was born at the end of July and we didn’t figure we’d have much of a problem with jaundice since we were outside a lot.  Little J was born the beginning of February in the middle of a rather dreary winter.  Big J had touches of jaundice (nothing serious, just “hey he needs more vitamin D”) and Little J never had a problem.  Not what we’d expected.

So it goes with our kiddos and, sorry for the potty talk, poop.  They are complete opposites.  I mentioned the rough diapers Little J has had in the Miracle Baby Bum Cream recipe I shared.  His poor little tushie gets so sore that cleaning him up can be quite the task.  These wipes have been a lifesaver and they are incredibly simple to make.  The witch hazel is soothing and makes changing diapers easier.

WITCH HAZEL WIPES

Materials:
– Witch Hazel
– Roll of Paper Towels.  I used the Viva brand because they are not quilted and are softer on raw skin.  However, they aren’t as thick as some of the quilted brands and I have to use a little more at one time.  I just double up the towel and then I don’t have to worry about the towel tearing or getting poop on my hands.
– Small Wipes Case
– Tape Measure
– Pencil
– Permanent Marker to label the case with
– Knife

Directions:
– Start by measuring the paper towel roll and marking the middle with the pencil.  A couple small lines should be enough.

– Use the knife to cut the roll in half.  I was scolded for using Mr Napping’s good bread knife, so it might be wise to use a knife with less prestige than “the good knives”.

– Take one of the halves and, without tearing any of the sheets off, lay them down in the wipes case.  Alternate how you lay them down, follow the arrows, as shown in the photo.

– When the case is full, tear the paper towels off the roll and saturate the towels in the case with the witch hazel.  I poured it on one side and pressed the towels down with my fingers to help the witch hazel soak into all the towels.  Then I flipped the stack of towels over and repeated the process.

– I store ours in a resealable baggie so they don’t dry out.  We don’t use them all the time, just when poor Little J jumps through the roof, crying and screaming at every diaper change.  I make about 20 at a time, unless we are using them frequently (when Little J is prescribed antibiotics, I make between 50 and 100 wipes, depending how long the medication is prescribed for).  We sure could have used these when Little J was first born, maybe we’ll need them in a few weeks with this new little peanut.

– Use the permanent marker to label the case to prevent any mix-ups during changing time.  Of course, you can get all awesome and label with something more than a permanent marker, but I’ve got other things I have to focus on at this point.

{Our Sixth Anniversary} Iron Date: DIY Mini Golf

A few weeks ago, Mr Napping and I celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary.  The budget was tight and I was nearly 34 weeks pregnant.  I can’t sit still for very long anymore, I can’t eat more than a fistful of food at a time and I’d been having contractions for weeks…  That took out dinner, a movie, and anything involving more than a gentle meander anywhere.  And of course an expensive spa trip or hotel room wasn’t really an option… tight budget, remember?  The sixth year is traditionally a gift of iron (traditional gift) or candy (modern gift).  So, this is what we did instead…

6th Anniversary Date DIY Indoor Mini Golf

– My husband ended up having to go into work for a few hours to fix some problems with their server.  When he was gone longer than I’d been hoping, I sent him this…

Invite to Date

Well, he was home about half an hour later…  =)  Hubby shuffled the kiddos off to grandma’s for the next 36 hours and while he was gone, I set this DIY mini golf course up:

Hole 1

Hole 2

Hole 3

Hole 4

Hole 5

Hole 6 cup

… and we went mini golfing.  By the way, that’s probably the most of a “home tour” as you’ll ever get from me.  I’d bought a cheap Kid’s Golf Set on Amazon and hidden it until we’d had our date and now my kids love setting up their own golf courses and then hitting each other on the head with the clubs.  Ah, life as the mother of boys.  Each hole was designed with the traditional or modern gift for that anniversary.  Hole one was made with wrapping paper, hole two with cotton, hole three with crystal (or as close as we had – glass), hole four with linen, hole five with wood and hole six with candy.  I kind of cheated on a few of them, but I was going with what I had on hand in my house in the time it took my husband to drive seven miles away, drop off our kids and come back.  My time and resources were limited.  It was goofy and silly, but totally fun.

I probably should have vacuumed and picked up the toys more before taking pictures to post online, but I didn’t clean up for hubby either… see, I treat you just like family.  Haha.  At nine months pregnant, he was getting a date or a clean house… not both.

I made up flags in photoshop, printed them out and cut them out.  Then, used skewers to make flags.  Then I had to get a little creative.  I had two yogurt cups from the boys’ breakfast that morning that I rinsed out.  I turned one of our glasses on it’s side to make another hole.  I used a small box I’d gotten in the mail a couple days earlier for one hole.  We have a set of wooden blocks with a weird house like contraption thing I used for the fifth hole.  And, after I emptied the Tootsie Rolls out of the bag, I used the empty bag as the last hole.  We even had water features… hehe.

We played that we had to go over the ramps, through the tunnels, and make full use of the obstacles.  It made it a little more difficult and competitive.
We had some lunch and just caught up on some of our TV for the next hour or two.  It’s not often I get to watch shows with real people, and not animated characters, in them while the sun is still out.  I’d told hubby what I wanted (another Chromecast for our TV in the family room) and we went to get that at Best Buy, since he hadn’t had a chance to pick it up yet.  I love that thing, let me tell you.
We had planned steaks, salad, sweet potato fries and grilled asparagus for dinner – all high in iron.  But, neither one of us wanted to cook.  So, we cheated and got Chinese take out instead.  We had started the movie Blind Side a week before and finished that while we ate (grid iron…), although it was very nearly a toss-up between that and Ironman.
We had fondue and omelettes the next morning (hubby cooked the eggs in his new cast-iron skillet) for breakfast.  I also gave him a new iron (yes, like for clothes).  We now have “his” and “hers” irons… Haha.  This way he can use “his” on his white dress shirts and I don’t have to scrub all the gunk off my “craft iron” every time I use it, in case he needs to iron his clothes.  Our gifts are often ironic.  Our first Christmas, I got him clothes (which he needed) and he got me tools (so I’d stop using his).  These types of gifts happen more often than not.  And we still laugh about it.  It’s been an awesome six years and I’m so glad we have forever together.

My family loves when we have breakfast for dinner! I’m addicted to pinterest and love to find new recipes by searching around my own boards as well as some of my favorite bloggers. {True story: My husband recently told me to stop using my laptop in the kitchen as I cook because traces of flour, etc had made their way into my keyboard… oops! haha} You can check out my two Pinterest accounts here and here. I’ve rounded up 15 of my most favorite breakfast recipes and ideas for you!

What’s in Daddy’s Hospital Bag?

While He Was Napping Welcome Banner

Hey, fellow momma! I’m so glad you stopped by today! Are you wondering what you’ll need to have in Daddy’s Hospital Bag? Look no further, I’ve got you covered!

First, CONGRATULATIONS! New babies are THE BEST and I am so happy for you! Motherhood is absolutely amazing; this is going to be the best roller coaster ride of your life!

There is a lot to prepare for during pregnancy. As much as it can stink, it’s a good thing pregnancy lasts nine months! You need that time to do all the prep work! I know it can be overwhelming. I’ve been there!

But, I’m going to help you! We’ll check at least one of those many things to do off your list.

You’ll be prepared when the day comes, whether it’s today, tomorrow or in a few weeks.

You’ll be confident that you have what you need when you head to the hospital to welcome your little one into your life.

Today, let’s take a closer look at the hospital bag. That’s what brought you here, after all. There are lots of lists of things for mom and baby to take to the hospital

But what about DADDY?

9 Must-Haves for Daddy's Hospital Bag

Do you want the best hospital stay possible? That’s exactly what you’ll get by following this list.

http://whilehewasnapping.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Daddys-Hospital-Bag1.jpg

My biggest mistake happened with my second baby. And that’s why this list is different than the other packing lists out there. This list is made from experience! From BAD experience.

There was a secret that no one told me when I went to have my second baby and it could’ve saved me. Do you want to know this secret? You don’t have to learn the hard way, because I’m going to tell you the secret. Ready?

Not all hospitals are created equally.

Obviously, hospitals have different layouts and available facilities, but the differences go deeper. Between our first and second babies, we moved to a new state… and a new hospital. Our second hospital was less… accommodating than our first. In fact, these small differences made us miserable while we were there.

If you have never delivered at the hospital you will be delivering your baby at this time, take a hospital tour! Find out what is provided and what you’ll need to provide yourself.

We were so under-prepared and we were the ones that suffered. There were things I regretted not having, but my poor husband got the short stick on that hospital stay. So, help Daddy out and pack him a bag too!

No, you can’t pack up a nice bed for daddy to sleep in, but there are some things you can take that would make daddy’s stay at the hospital a little more comfy.
Which means, Daddy can help YOU.
When a new baby is born, Mommy gets most of the focus – and rightfully so – but don’t let Daddy be miserable either. A new baby is a big change in his life too. Be prepared and you can all enjoy this beginning of your new adventure!

I’ve done all the work for you and even given you links to each product. The links in this post will take you to Amazon, where you can easily purchase these items and have them delivered right to your doorstep. No end-of-pregnancy waddling around the store for you! Just sit on the couch, eat chocolate truffles and wait for the mail to be delivered! I will get a small portion of any purchase you decide to make, but it in no way affects your cost. These links are one way I help support this site. Thanks! Here’s the list!

http://whilehewasnapping.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Daddys-Hospital-Bag1.jpg

DADDY’S HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #1:

Pillow.  Daddy should have a decent pillow, even if it’s just a travel size one.  He’ll probably be trying to catch his zzz’s whenever he can, just like you.  Skip the super flat or too-poofy hospital pillows and get him a pillow filled to his liking. Besides, if he has a good pillow, he’s less likely to snore and keep you up. Hospital rooms can echo… the pillow is worth it. This travel pillow is great because it’s small, but effective and if it gets ruined or left behind it’s not a big loss.

DADDY’S HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #2:

Snacks.  We’re talking man snacks here.  Things like:

  • Jerky
  • cheese
  • breads or even simple sandwiches
  • hearty granola bars or protein bars
  • nuts and pretzels
  • dried fruit
  • crackers and canned tuna
  • fruit leather
  • fruits and veggies cut up with hummus dip
  • bagels or muffins

Taking your own snacks will save you money and Daddy won’t have to hunt down vending machines or the cafeteria. He (and you!) can get into his stash any time his little heart desires, whether the cafeteria is open or not. We usually take a small soft-sided lunch bag for things that need to be kept cool with an ice pack or two wrapped in aluminium foil. By the time the ice melts, the food is gone.

Make sure there are some low-aroma snacks Daddy can munch on while you’re in labor. You probably won’t be allowed to eat and labor makes my oversensitive nose go into overdrive! Any kind of food smells make me nauseous. But I always raid his snacks after I’ve had a baby. Child birth is a lot of hard work and I’m always famished afterward! Want a quick and easy way to get those snacks? This snack basket will come right to your door and it doubles great as a “New Daddy” gift!

DADDY’S HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #3:

Extra shirts.  No one wants to wear “the badge of fatherhood” all day.  Take a couple extra shirts for daddy. He will probably end up wearing some kind of bodily secretion by the end of the day. It’s a great time to get him a fun “Dad” shirt and he’ll appreciate not smelling like curdled breast milk or formula… or worse. You can click any image below to see that specific shirt. These shirts are fun and Daddy can wear them long after you leave the hospital.

http://whilehewasnapping.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Daddys-Hospital-Bag1.jpg

DADDY’S HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #4:

Sweats, athletic shorts or other PJ’s. Nurses, lab technicians and a whole slew of people will come and go from your room at all hours of the day and night. Unless Dad plans to spend 24/7 in his clothes, he’ll want something comfy to sleep in, but also something he feels sufficiently covered up while wearing. Your body will be on display to just about every medical professional that comes into your room, but Daddy will probably prefer a little more privacy. These options are great, can be used after your hospital stay, would go great in a “New Dad” gift basket and will come right to your doorstep! You can click each image for more details. If you get Daddy in that first one, be sure to take photos. 😉

DADDY’S HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #5:

Towel.  My epidurals tend to take longer than most people’s to wear off and I was numb for HOURS after they took it out. Because I was still a little numb, my husband was not about to let me stand up by myself in a slippery shower.

The towels our first hospital did provide were not great and almost too small to thoroughly dry off and our second hospital only provided one, which we’d used to mop up a spilled pitcher of water. These towels are nice and big though!

I’m just gonna be blunt here and suggest a dark color to help hide stains. You can use this towel for the next few weeks until you stop bleeding. Whether you toss it after that or hang on to it for your next childbirth adventure is up to you.

DADDY’S HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #6:

Swim trunks.  These are to wear in the shower if Daddy isn’t keen on the possibility of doctors or nurses catching him in his birthday suit. We didn’t bother and just jumped in the shower in our typical attire – or lack thereof – but my husband was in the military and not a stranger to public showers. If Daddy is a little more conservative and worried about modesty, swim trunks might help ease the discomfort and allow him to help you more. These basic trunks are great and not a big loss if you need to throw them out afterward.

DADDY’S HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #7:

Laptop, tablet or other things to do. While I wouldn’t want my husband anywhere but the delivery room while I deliver, I don’t really want him to smother me either.

I am a silent sufferer and prefer to be left alone than have my hair stroked or shoulders rubbed. I want him there, but not in my face. If you want Daddy right there, breathing through the contractions with you, then have him do that. But, if you’d rather be left alone to deal with your stuff, giving Daddy a little distraction can be good for everyone. Something kind of mindless that can be dropped at a moments notice, should the need arise, is perfect. A gift card for some new apps might be fun too.

Google Play Store

DADDY’S HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #8:

The phone numbers list.  It’s pretty easy to get word out about Baby’s birth with all the social media options these days.  Even my grandma is on Facebook. Heck, both of my grandmas are, and my grandpa! But, some people deserve an actual phone call or picture message at least. Make sure all those extra special people (and the ones not on social media – like my dad) are included on the list so no one gets forgotten or missed.

You can get the one below when you sign up for The ULTIMATE Hospital Packing List.

The Ultimate Hospital Packing List Cover

DADDY’S HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #9:

Any other checklists or special instructions you want Daddy to know.  Discuss certain medical procedures and complications with your birth partner beforehand and in what ways you would like to handle them.  Heaven forbid you hemorrhage or something; but, there is the chance you won’t be able to make decisions for yourself at some point during the childbirth process. Having someone else aware of your wants and wishes can help in difficult situations where life-altering decisions have to be made right now.

Of course, it’s not a bad idea to ask Daddy if there’s anything else he wants to take… After all, it is Daddy’s Hospital Bag. The Boy Scouts knew what they were doing when they chose the motto “Be Prepared!” If you are, it will make your first few days with baby more enjoyable for your entire family.

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
