Have You Missed Me? When Your RSS Feed Doesn’t Update…

So, you wanna know what’s super awesome?  Realizing that your RSS Feed has been broken for almost a month.  Oh, and so is having your diaper-wearing, almost-two-year-old on antibiotics for the second time in two weeks.  Makes for some incredible diaper-changing experiences – I haven’t had to wash this many clothes since he was a newborn.  Eww.  But, I’ll spare you the details.

So, while you’re being completely grossed out and (hopefully) a little grateful that the last bit I mentioned is not your problem, the first part might be affecting you.  I’ll explain briefly and then tell you how to fix it.

I don’t have any idea why, but around the first week or so in December, my RSS feed stopped updating.  I don’t recall making any changes to the feed itself or anything on my blog that would have broken the validity of the feed, but apparently something did.

When this happened, anyone who receives my posts in the form of a reader (Feedly, Bloglovin’, Digg, NewsBlur, Pulse, Flipboard and the like) stopped receiving any of my new posts.  Lame.  For you and me.  Although December was a busy month, I thought I posted a few good articles and I’m sorry if you missed out on something because of technical difficulties you had nothing to do with and no control over (and quite probably didn’t even know existed… like me).  I try to get out interesting, relevant and helpful content so it’s lame that my hard work went unseen by nearly 2,100 subscribers for nearly a month.  (While I don’t kid myself that 2100 people actually read what I say every day, even just a couple hundred over the course of a month can add up in stats.)

So, I spent a good chunk of time this morning fixing the issue.  Like I mentioned, I don’t know what happened and I won’t bore you will all the things I tried; however, I think it’s been corrected.  Unfortunately, I pretty much ended up having to delete everything and start over.

So, if you subscribed to While He Was Napping in any kind of reader or app on your mobile devices, you probably will have to go back and re-add this blog to receive any posts.  Lame, I know.  I’m sorry.  I couldn’t figure out any way to seamlessly keep everyone subscribed and get the feed updated.  All the buttons are on the sidebar for easy access though.

For readers such as Feedly, you’ll need to re-enter the URL of the homepage (http://whilehewasnapping.com) and select the option that shows a valid feed.  See the photo below for directions in Feedly if you need a little guidance.  It’s the same steps as adding new content.  The steps should be similar for other app readers.

So, apologies, again, for whatever the issue may have been.  Hopefully it’s fixed now.  If you notice any other problems, let me know.  And now, back to our scheduled programming… You won’t want to miss tomorrow’s post…

{Printable} Kid’s Winter Boredom Buster Jar

We have been super lucky and, except for a brutal cold snap during the beginning of December (we’re talking like -4F! BRRRR!), we’ve had pretty mild winter weather this year.  Like out in sweatshirts during the day, or maybe a light jacket.  Now, it gets chilly when the sun goes down, but that’s kind of what happens in the desert… even with daytime temps near triple digits.

However, being in my third trimester and about the size of a boat, I haven’t wanted to venture out with my crazy, energetic hooligans.  I just don’t have the energy or stamina to chase after them.  Especially that Little J… he’s into everything and has already developed selective hearing for the words “don’t”, “no”, “stop”, “get down”, “listen to me” and similar commands.  So, I made up the Boredom Buster Jar – Winter Edition.  It’s got activities that will (mostly) keep us inside – where I can contain the chaos (mostly) and we can still try to have learning moments (maybe).

Unfortunately, all the photos turned out blurry that I had taken of our jar – and the boys… hence, why they were blurry.  Then, that ever-curious Little J let himself into the laundry room (to which I always keep the door closed), climbed himself up three shelves to my tool bag, helped himself to my hammer and back down three shelves (whew, he doesn’t always nail the ‘back down’ part) with said hammer.  Hang on, it gets better.  Can you guess what he did with that hammer?  Well, let’s just say he came and told me “Bang, bang, bang.  It’s broke.”  It sure was… he smashed that jar into a billion pieces.  After I frantically checked him for cuts, scrapes, and deep, profusely bleeding gashes I cleaned it all up, relocated my tool bag and put a child lock on that door.  Apparently, he’s also mastered the turning of door knobs and can now grant himself access to any room without those annoying child locks.  Yay for that new skill?  I did not, however, replace the jar (fool me once…) and our activity strips are currently being housed in some super classy, missing two tabs, plastic Snap Ware.  Where was I while all this happened?  Doing the dishes.  So, moral of the story…?  Clearly, don’t do the dishes.  Right?

Anyway.  Here’s a little sneak peek at the Winter boredom buster printable.  You can download the watermark-free version of this page HERE.  If you would like 16 more activities and a blank template page to fill in your own fun winter activities you can find that in my Etsy Shop.

Goals Countdown for 2014

UPDATE: If you want the 2015 version of this printable, you can find it HERE.

I believe that you’re never too young to set goals.  Now, my nearly-two-year-old doesn’t have the faintest idea what that even means and I’m sure it’s still a foggy concept for my four-and-a-half-year-old.  At least in those terms.  But Big J knows what it means to work on doing something consistently (say brushing his teeth…) and he might not understand what a goal is, but he does have them.  He wants to practice drawing and learn to write his S’s better so he’s ready for kindergarten.  He told me.

So, I created a little page to help remind him of some of the things he wants to do this next year.  Hopefully, every time Big J sees his page he will remember some of the things he wants to accomplish and it can be a reminder, even though he can’t actually read what’s written yet.

Right-click, open in new window and save as to your computer.  You can then print as many copies as you’d like.  Image is designed as an 8″x10″.  You may share the printed copies, but please point others back here for the file.  No part or variation of this image may be reproduced, sold, or given away without permission from me, the designer.  I reserve all rights.

40 Tutorials & Recipes: The Best of 2013 on While He Was Napping

Wow, another year is winding down.  It’s been a bit of a crazy, busy year for us in the Napping household.  Little J turned 1, Mr Napping and I celebrated five years of wedded bliss, Big J is halfway through his last year before he starts kindergarten (I’m not sure I’ve come to grips with that yet) and we’re waiting for another little one to bless our family with more craziness!

Lots has happened here in blogland too!  After Little J was born almost two years ago, I was a bit overwhelmed (to say the least) and my blogging dropped off the grid for a bit; but I decided that I do enjoy blogging, put my waders back on and stepped back into the pond of the blogosphere.  And I’m glad I did.  I hope I’ll be able to keep up once April and our newest baby get here…  Time will tell on that I guess.

Click the links or photos below for each detailed tutorial or recipe, as well as links to any printables that go along with the individual projects.  Here we go!

DIY No-Sew Kid’s Fishing Set

Depending on how many fish you make, this project can take anywhere from an hour to three or so.  I made quite the catch, so it took me a little longer than I first planned.  It’s pretty easy though and makes a fun gift for the kiddos.  And, AND… it helps develop eye-hand coordination!  Educational and fun!  Woo!  Let’s get right to it then…

KID’S FELT FISHING SET
DIY Kid's Felt Fishing Set

Materials:
– Felt (I used scraps and 9×12″ sheets from my craft stash)
– Scissors (the sharper, the better)
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– Paper clips
– Magnet (it will need to be fairly strong.  I used one from a package I found in the craft department at Wal-Mart.  It works fairly well… more details in a minute…)
– Felt scraps or other stuffing material
– Dowel
– 1/4″ hole punch
Directions:
– Use the scissors to cut fish shapes out of the felt.  You will need two identical pieces of each fish.  I folded the felt in half and then cut the fish shapes.  I just cut the fish freehand, but you can do an image search on the web and print it off if you want a template if you want your fishing set more symmetrical.
DIY Kid's Felt Fishing Set
– Glue one paper clip to the inside of each of the felt pieces.  For larger fish, I glued more than one paper clip, usually one at the head and one in the tail.
DIY Kid's Felt Fishing Set
– Glue the front of each fish together with the paper clips on the inside.  Stuff the fish through the tail.  I used the scraps from cutting out my fish shapes to stuff them with.  Worked great, although they may be a bit heavier than than if I’d used batting or something similar.  Glue the tails together.

That’s it for the fish.  Just repeat a bazillion more times.  I think I ended up with about 25 fish.  I wanted enough fish in my fishing set that my boys could play together without fighting over them.  Hopefully, that will work… fingers crossed.

– For the reel, I used a dowel, a piece of baker’s twine, a small piece of paper and a magnet.

DIY Kid's Felt Fishing Set

– I tied the baker’s twine around the dowel a couple times and then knotted it.  I secured it with a dot of glue to help keep it in place.

DIY Kid's Felt Fishing Set

– To attach the magnet, I used my 1/4-inch hole punch to punch out a small circle from some scrapbook paper.  This is totally optional.  I punched a small hole in the middle of the paper circle.  I did this so you wouldn’t see the mess of glue and string on top of the magnet.  Thread the paper through the hole onto the baker’s twine.
– Use the hot glue to secure the twine to the top of the magnet.
– Slide the paper down the string and glue it on top of the magnet, covering the string.
– Then I put a small line of glue around the edge of the magnet to secure the paper to the magnet.  A small dot of glue around the little hole where the twine is coming out helps reinforce that as well.

DIY Kid's Felt Fishing Set

We store ours in a small fabric bag (actually, it’s the bag a king-size sheet came in).  Little J didn’t quite get the concept, but he won’t tattle when Santa brings a new Fishing Set for Christmas either.  This is right up Big J’s alley and he’s gonna love it!  And Little J will grow into it.

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
