Weekend Wander #148

Welcome back to another awesome party!  If you missed last week’s party and haven’t gotten your entries in to win the Diamond Candle Giveaway, hurry over there quick as there’s only about an hour left.

I’m crazy busy today and don’t have time to do features.  Sorry.  But thanks a bunch to everyone who linked up.  Especially those of you that keep coming back every week!  It wouldn’t be much of a party without you!  Now, link ’em up!

Inspirational Quote Frames {With Printable Quotes}

Welcome! Do you love a good inspirational quote? I do. Always have. Inspirational quotes are just what I need when I’m feeling a little low. Like I’ve been knocked down and all I really want to do is crawl back to bed and spend the rest of the day – or week – with the covers over my head. These easy and inexpensive inspirational quote frames are the perfect way to display that little boost.

This took me about 20-30 minutes to put together… quick and easy. I also did it with a group of five 8-11 year old girls and it took them 90 minutes to do. But, everyone went home with a completed frame and they were happy with how they turned out, even though there were a few who thought they made little mistakes.  Live and learn, right?

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE FRAMES

Inspirational Quote Frame

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE FRAME MATERIALS:

– Cheap picture frame (this is the kind we used, but I got them at Wal-Mart in the kid’s craft section for $0.97/each. If you’re looking to get a lot of frames, here they are even cheaper!)
– Scrapbook Paper – I love this pad and it’s bright colors
– Tacky Glue
– Scissors
– Pencil
– Baker’s Twine or Ribbon
– Two small clothes pins (like this – not the mini ones, but the one that are about an inch long.)
– Inspirational Quotes (you can use the ones I made up for my girls by clicking on the link and downloading.  18 quotes in one PDF file.  For personal use only please.  If you share the quotes, link to this page and not the download page, pretty please and thanks!).

DIRECTIONS TO MAKE YOUR INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE FRAME:

– Choose a scrapbook paper and flip it over so the printed side is down.  Trace around your frame, both inside the hole and the outside edge.
– Trace another separate rectangle (just inside the hole).  Make sure you flip this one over, as the pencil marks will be visible if you don’t.  We had some girls use coordinating paper for this, but I just used the same paper.  This will make the “back” to your frame.  See image below.  The black rectangles are what you should have traced on your paper.
Inspirational Quote Frame
– Cut out the middle rectangle of the top tracing by poking a small hole in the middle and then cutting on the line you traced.  We had a couple girls cut through to the middle.  We just showed them how to glue the paper down so the cut wasn’t as noticeable.
– Cut out the single rectangle about 1/2 inch bigger than it’s traced.  You’ll need the extra to sit on the lip/grooves of the back of the frame.  Cut bigger rather than smaller.  You can always take more off, it’s much harder to put it back on.  The girls looked at me like I was a moron when I said that, but guess how many had to go back and cut another back?  Hint: it was more than one!  See the image below for what pieces you will need.
Inspirational Quote Frame

– Glue the border (the top rectangle) to the frame with the tacky glue.
– Measure out a piece of ribbon or baker’s twine and cut it to fit inside your frame (just over six inches for a 4×6″ frame).  Glue the twine near the top on the inside edge of the frame.  Some of the girls used hot glue to speed up the drying time.

Inspirational Quote Frame

– Cut a slightly smaller rectangle and glue that to the inside “back” rectangle to make a little pocket you can store any extra inspirational quotes in.  *If I was smarter, I would have just cut the bottom of my “back” rectangle longer and folded it up to make the pocket.  That was too many steps ahead for my brain though.

Inspirational Quote Frames

–  Slide the “back” rectangle into the frame and secure the little tabs.
– Clip two clothes pins to the twine and hang your inspirational quote.  Ta-da!

Inspirational Quote Frame

GIVE SOME LOVE & ENCOURAGEMENT WITH AN INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE FRAME GIFT!

Lots of steps, but it’s a pretty simple project, I promise.  I love that the quotes can be changed so easily and they are easy to keep track of with the storage pocket on the back.  This would be a great gift for older kids to make grandma and grandpa or a friend for Christmas, birthdays, Grandparent’s Day. Because, who can’t use a little encouragement through out the day; and, these Inspirational Quote Frames are the perfect way to share that little bit of love!

{Mom’s Cup of Ambition} Apple Rosemary Scones

Jill from Mom’s Cup of Ambition is here again and has a delicious recipe to share today.  So, on to the good stuff!  Take it away, Jill!

______________________________________________________
APPLE ROSEMARY SCONES

I’ve been experimenting with the combination of apples and rosemary lately.  The flavors really suit each other well.  My favorite output from one of these experiments is apple rosemary scones.  They’re best served warm, but so far no one has turned them down at room temperature either.  If you don’t have half and half on hand try substituting milk or buttermilk.
Put on your favorite sweater, rake some leaves, pop a batch of these in the oven to enjoy with hot tea, and you’ll remember why Fall is the undisputed best season on Earth.
Apple Rosemary Scones
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/2 cup cold butter (1 stick), cut into cubes
1 cup peeled and chopped tart apple (like Granny Smith)
½ cup plus 2 tablespoons half and half
Egg wash – 1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons milk
¼ C sugar for topping
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Lightly grease a baking sheet and set it aside.
Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and rosemary in a large bowl.  Use a pastry cutter, two knives, or a food processor to cut the butter into the flour.  The mixture should resemble coarse meal. Fold in the apples.  Mix in ½ cup half and half.  If the mixture is too dry, add the extra two tablespoons of half and half until the dough comes together.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly flowered surface, and pat it into a 6 inch round.  The dough should be about 1 ½ inches thick.  Use a pizza cutter to slice the dough into 6 pie shaped wedges.  Carefully place the scones on the prepared cookie sheets.  Brush the tops with egg wash.  Sprinkle the sugar evenly on top of the scones.
Bake the scones at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until brown and firm to the touch.

Thanks, Jill!  Don’t those look so tasty?!  Add that to my already-incredibly long holiday baking list!  YUM!

{Printable} Always Be Thankful Chalkboard Printable

I’ve got a super fun printable poster for you today. It’s so great when this time of year comes around and everyone seems to be a little nicer and a little more thoughtful towards others. Except the guy that cut me off while I was picking up Big J from preschool today… But, I guess you can’t have everything. Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone behaved like that all the time?!  The being extra nice part, not the cutting people off in traffic. But, thankfully, getting cut off was just an annoyance and not a car accident or something like that. See… there’s always something to be thankful for.

Have you ever thought it would be helpful to have a cute little reminder to Always be Thankful? This printable should do just that!

ALWAYS BE THANKFUL

WM-Always-be-Thankful

Get your free copy of the Always be Thankful chalkboard printable HERE.

Click the link above to download the full quality, watermark-free print from Google Drive. You’re welcome to print as many as you like. All I ask is credit when it’s due and a link back to this page if you’d like to share this print on the web.

The file is formatted to 8×10″ and can be cropped smaller (5×7″ and 4×6″) with no problems. The free download is for personal use only. If you’d like a larger print, let me know and I’ll set you up a listing (and a deal!) in my Etsy Shop.  Thanks and Happy Holidays!

{Guest Post} Thanksgiving Craft Round Up

My guest post for today fell through, but I had a request to guest post in my inbox and, what do ya know, this worked out quite well.  Kristin Wilis has ut together a round up of fun Thanksgiving ideas.  Take a look at those and I’ll try to get life together enough to get a post up a little later.  I’m thinking printable…. you with me on that?!  Anyway, here’s Kristin’s round up…

Thanksgiving Craft Roundup

Fall is here; full of vibrant leaves filling the trees, and the smell of pumpkin pie is on the tip of your nose. And with the season, comes the wonderful stuffing and Turkey dinner. Thanksgiving is such a fun, decorative holiday, where you can bring out the beauty of the fall colors into your home. You will be eager to impress your guests when they arrive for the big dinner feast, won’t you? Well, here are some simplistic, yet inexpensive festive craft ideas for you and your family to put together without much of a hassle.

Toilet Paper Roll Hand Turkey

Toilet Paper Roll Hand Turkey
Hand Turkeys are easy enough and a great way for your young children to get in on the decorating action. All it takes is some empty toilet paper rolls, colored construction paper, scissors and glue, which you could easily snag for no more than $5. In no time at all, you have a wonderful folk family Thanksgiving Turkeys.

Fall Banners

Fall Banner” align:
Any colored yarn, tape, construction paper and black marker can create a beautiful banner to show off anywhere in your home. Cut the construction paper into different shapes, such as leaves or pumpkins. Red, orange and brown colored paper allows your home to have the Thanksgiving feel to it. Distinguish it even more, by writing “let’s give thanks” or “happy thanksgiving”.

Wreath UP

Fall Wreath
While it is enjoyable to create your own wreath from scratch, the cost can start adding up. Before deciding to go full force with it, be sure to check out your local hobby or retail store for clearance wreaths. After a certain point, you can easily find holiday wreaths for up to 60% off. You can spice it up by placing your own twist to them. Just add the first letter of your last name, for personalization.

Pumpkin Decorations

Pumpkin Decorations
After the Halloween holiday, many grocery stores reduce their prices on pumpkins, to about 50% or more. This is the perfect time to snag some big ones for a cheaper price. They are still part of the Fall season, so decorating your home with these would not only be easy, but it will be easy on your wallet too. Color the pumpkins with polka dots or stripes. Dress it up in colorful bows, or even leave it as is.

Family Tree

Family Tree Craft
This idea is a wonderful family project that your children and you will enjoy. Head on outside and go on a Scavenger Hunt to find and collect different colored leaves. Afterwards, use a white poster board that can be purchased at your local Wal-Mart for only $0.30, draw a trunk, and glue all of the leaves you found. For each leaf, write what you are thankful for. If necessary, add pieces of twigs to bring the tree portrait more to life. Proudly exhibit your family tree on the wall with other craft decorations.

Photos Galore

Photos Galore
This time around, the leaves are altering into extravagant colors, so take out that camera of yours and start taking some pictures. Find your favorite spots near your area and score multiple shots of the stunning view. Don’t get too picky with the angles and levels and don’t hold back. Use these photos to make autumn collages to hang up in your living room that you could utilize over and over again. Photo Centers, such as Walgreens and Target offer major picture discounts during the holiday season, so this project can effortlessly be a win-win.

Candle Centerpieces

Candle Centerpieces
If you are a candle lover and need a modest centerpiece, try this one out. With a medium-sized stable vegetable, such as a zucchini, squash or pumpkin, cut out the top portion to fit the size of your candle. Add a few spice-scented pinecones to give it more color. That is simplicity at its finest. You’ve got an adorable focus and conversation starter on Thanksgiving. Your guests will want to learn more about your holiday decorating ideas and tips.

Chain Link

Chain Link
Remember those red, yellow, brown and orange colors? If you’ve got a bit of that construction paper handy, get it out again and create a chain link. This idea could also be used as a banner. On each link, have your family write down different things they are thankful for. On Thanksgiving Day, sit down together share what each other wrote down.

Mason Jars

Mason Jars
Do you have any old mason jars lying around? Turn them into some cute décor for your home. Customize the jars by using stencils to spell out the word “fall” or “autumn” in an elegant fashion. Include glow sticks or fake tea candles to lighten it up a bit. What’s fantastic is that these can be used either inside or outside of your house.
These decoration ideas are not only cost-effective, but they are enjoyable for the whole family. Try out these money-saving decorating ideas and see where your imagination takes you. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
