Hoo Are You #36

Yeah, I know you’re thinking uh, what?  Where were the first 35?  Right?  Well, I did a few of them, but fell off that bandwagon.  And then I was looking at my 101 in 1001 and realized, I’m not doing so hot with #41.  I’ve tried to step up the Facebook communication in the last week or so, but there’s only a handful of people over there and even less who take the time to do more than just read the post.  So, I’m going to try this again.

This week’s questions:
1. What are a couple of your favorite green foods?
2. Do you decorate for St. Patrick’s Day?
3. Do you have Irish in you?
4. Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
5.Use one word that represents each letter in the word LUCK in your life!

1.  Grapes, artichokes, and green bean casserole.  I also like chocolate.  Oh, wait.  That’s not green.
2.  Uhm, I made a printable subway art?  I think other people hung it up in their houses, does that count?
3.  Barely.  On my mom’s side.  I’d love to visit Ireland someday though.
4.  I wear green so I don’t get pinched… and we usually have a “green” themed dinner.  But that’s about it.
5.  L-Love, U-Unabridged (I talk too much and rarely ever get right to the point), C-Curious, K-Krista (I couldn’t think of anything else…)

Carved Candles

Candles are pretty much a necessity in decorating, in my opinion. I’m, by no means, a pro; but, in our house I am the one with the eye for the aesthetically pleasing.  That’s a term I picked up from my 8th grade English teacher.  Weird, right?  Anyway, candles.  Candles are one of those things that are easy to find and aren’t usually a strain on the budget.  And, if they are a strain, there’s probably a way to DIY for a lot less than the name brands are asking.  (Like, did you see these PB knock offs?  I want me some of them!)

Here is a cheap, easy and relatively quick way to embellish your candles.
Here’s the How:
1)  You will need a candle and something to use as a scraping tool.  I used a mechanical pencil that no longer works to scrape the wax on my candle.  It worked pretty well.  I also used a cheap red candle from the Dollar Store.  I did this on purpose, not ‘cause I’m cheap.  Ok, partly because I’m cheap, but I also wanted a candle that just had the color layered on.  With the white wax of the candle base, I didn’t have to paint my carving.  Hopefully, that will make more sense later.
2)  Begin by drawing your pattern on your candle or lightly scratching it into the wax.  I just sorta free-handed the whole thing, but I go against the grain and hate patterns.  I warned you about sewing, but really I just have a general dislike for patterns.
3)  Take your scraping tool (mechanical pencil, in my case) and begin scraping deeper into the candle.  It works best to work in layers.  If you use the cheap Dollar Store candles you will eventually scrape through all the colored wax.  The white wax of the candle base will then show through.  If you are using a solid color candle you can paint your carvings with candle medium and that will make them more visible.  After you’ve gone all the way around your candle or have your chosen design carved, that’s it.  You’re done!
Disclaimer:  These candles are for decorative purposes only.  Don’t burn them, as the thinner wax may melt as your candle burns, creating a fire hazard.
If you MUST burn these (which would be really cool once your candle burns so you can see the light through your carvings) make sure you use a candle plate.  Candles should always be burned on a plate!  And ALWAYS supervise your     lit candles.  If you do burn these and your house catches on fire, I accept no liability.  I did very specifically say don’t do that!

ABC’s of Love: V is for

V-  Vows, Valentine, Vacation, Vanilla, Vineyard, Vista, Variety, Value, Verse, Virtual, Visit

Ideas:
Vows-  Renew your vows.  Whether you do a fancy shin-dig or a small exchange with each other, the meaning is the same.

Vacation-  Make plans to take a vacation sometime this year.  Schedule it into the calendar so it doesn’t get pushed off.

Vineyard-  Live near a vineyard?  Take a tour this summer.  Make plans to do so.

Vista-  Find somewhere pretty and go watch the sunset.

Variety-  Give your sweetie a variety pack of their favorites.

RACY WARNING:  Stop Now.

Voluptuous, Vixen, Vibration, Virgin

Virgin-  We don’t drink, so I meant this as in virgin drinks.  But because that isn’t the only meaning… it’s here.

Happy Romancin’!

What’s Your Opinion?

I’m beginning to think about scheduling future events.  It you notice on the Upcoming Events page, we are getting close to the end of what is already listed.  I have a “Spring Fever Week” coming up the first full week in March, where I’ll help you rid those winter blues and get ready for some warmer weather (we can hope, right?!?  I don’t know about you, but I’m so done with winter!).  After that I plan on doing some organizing and cleaning posts under the theme of Spring Cleaning.  Other than that… I have no plans.  So, here’s your chance to give some input… What do you want to see posts about?  Crafts?  Recipes?  Kid-Friendly Ideas?  Cleaning and Organizing?  Doing Cartwheels?  Any suggestions are welcome!  Leave a comment with your ideas or email me… whilehewasnapping@gmail… also, if you’re interested in guest posting, I’d be thrilled to have you.  Let me know!

Just a Quick Announcement

I just wanted to point your attention to the new spot on the sidebar.  It’s the Advertising tab.  Also, there is a new link in my header, also labeled Advertising.  I am now accepting sponsorships and advertising.  If you are interested, please see the guidelines HERE.

The main reason I bring your attention to this is for my weekly link party I host, Weekend Wander.  I love hosting the party and getting to see your projects.  Most of which, honestly, I wouldn’t see any other way.  I don’t often have enough time in my day to sit and surf through blogs and the party is the perfect way to get pointed to all your cool ideas and projects.  You’ve probably heard that it is no longer free to host these parties.  I asked at Weekend Wander this week if you guys preferred the thumbnail links, or if text links were good enough.  Thumbnails were, by far, the majority favorite.  I also like the thumbnails.  Subscriptions for the service I am looking at are $20/year.  At this point, I can’t afford the $20 upfront.  Sad, I know; alas, it’s true.

If you link to the party every week, please consider purchasing some advertising space.  I’m having a discount on it right now to try and help you all out as well.  All money will go toward the subscription for the link party, until it is covered.  I will also use any proceeds from my Etsy shop to help make up the difference.  So, head over and check that out as well, if you’d like to help.  If I don’t have enough to purchase the subscription by this weekend we will be stuck with text links until I do.  This really is something I would like to keep up, but I’m going to need your help to do so.  Thanks.

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
