10 Things I Hate About Your Blog

I found this post on Hope Studios and it brought up some very good points.  She points out a site, 10 Things I Hate About Your Site, that gives critiques on websites and blogs.  It’s a fun site to look through without having to publically have your own site blasted to bits.  Anyway, Hope Studios wrote up her own version of top peeves she experiences in the blog world.  And I’m going to add my two-cents here.

10 Ways to Make Your Blog More Reader Friendly:

1)  Auto-play music.  Turn it off.  Get rid of it.  Especially on a craft or food or other general topic blog.  I do have music on my family’s blog.  If you insist on music, put the player at the top of the page so viewers can easily turn it off if they want.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I hate music.  I love music, but I often blog surf while watching TV with my hubby… he’s not so fond of having his current TV show or movie interrupted by blaring strains of the Dixie Chicks or anyone else.

2)  CAPTCHA or word verification.  Turn it off, please.  I promise you will get more comments if you do.  Blogger has a pretty good spam filter that catches almost all spam.  If you want to monitor comments, turn that feature on.  But turn CAPTCHA off.  Pah-leeze.  Pretty, pretty please.  It’s on by default in Blogger, so double check your settings.  There’s a full tutorial HERE.

3)   Too many font sizes and colors.  Stick to three or four different fonts through out your entire blog.  You should also stick to three or four font colors through out your blog.  All the colors should be easily legible.  Black backgrounds with neon green font are not kind to eyes.  Majority consensus is a light background with black text is preferred.

4)  No personalization.  Your blog should reflect several things.  First, whatever it is that you blog about.  Second, it should reflect you.  What makes you stand out as a person?  As a blogger?  Why should I read your blog?  There are millions and millions of blogs out there.  What’s special about yours?  Personally I prefer a blog that has a distinct look.  One that I click on and, as the page loads, I know exactly where I am.  Cookie cutter templates are easy and convenient.  But, when I’ve visited seven other blogs today that look just like yours… they all just kinda meld together.  Stand out.  Custom backgrounds and headers are a great way to do this.  If you need help, ask for it.  I’m more than willing to help you out.  For a small fee, I and many talented others offer to do it for you.

5)  No button code.  If you want me, or anyone else, to post your button, make it easy for us.  If you don’t provide the button code it’s a lot more work for me to post it on my site.  Especially if I have to resize it to fit my blog.  With the code I plug in one more line of text and BAM!  It’s good to go.  Don’t know how to make a button code box?  This is a great step-by-step tutorial.

6)  Enable your email.  Or at least post contact information somewhere.  Enabling your email is the easiest way to connect to other bloggers.  I get every single comment in my email.  If you ask a question, and your email is enabled, I simply answer it and send it flying through cyberspace to your inbox.  If you don’t have your email enabled, I may answer it in the comments, but who knows if you’ll ever see it.  For example, I got a super sweet comment from a lady about one of my printables.  Unfortunately, the date on it was wrong.  Had I been able to find her email address, I would’ve made one up with the right date and she would have had the printable she wanted, with the correct year.  Just like that.  But I didn’t know how to get it to her, so… If you don’t want your personal email address floating around cyberspace (and I don’t blame you), take 5 minutes and set up an email specifically for your blog.  If you want to be a successful blogger, you will need one eventually.  Just set it up now.

7)  No Navigation.  I will stick around your site longer if I can easily find your content.  Blogger offers a list of popular posts.  You can choose how many posts show up, most popular of all time or recently popular.  The drop down menus that list the months aren’t helpful.  How do I know if anything you wrote in June 2010 will interest me?  I don’t have time to sift through every single one of your posts, so show me what your got!

8)  Photoless Tutorials.  It’s hard to explain things perfectly for everyone to understand.  Photos will usually help people get the idea, even if you don’t explain it perfectly.  That being said, you don’t need to include photos of every single little step.  I don’t need to see the salt in the teaspoon and then in the bowl and then as you mix it up.  I know how to measure out salt.  Now, beating meringue until stiff is something not everyone will know what that looks like.  Take a picture of that.

9)  A cluttered, disorganized sidebar.  Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t have anything in your sidebar.  But, you should be selective about what you give priority in your sidebar real estate.  Also, if you are going to have a “Followers” button for me to push, put it near the top of your sidebar.  That makes it easy to find, but it doesn’t look quite so vain as putting it above your posts.  It’s also helpful to group your subscription and follow options together.  That way your readers can see all the choices at once.  And blogs with lots of ads… big turn off for me.  I get why, but again, be selective.  Very selective.

10)  Comment Etiquette.  This isn’t so much your blog, as the way you interact with other’s blogs.  And this may be my biggest peeve…  I read every single comment I get.  Yes, every single one.  And I respond to many of them.  I appreciate people taking the time to comment.  Reading comments on other blogs from someone who points out all the things that are wrong with a project is such a downer and makes the commenter look like a meanie.  And I know from experience, it makes the blog owner feel bad.

If you don’t have something constructive to say, move on.  I said constructive, that doesn’t mean you can’t disagree.  If you want to express your disagreement, do it politely.  If you have an issue with someone (like finding your photos on their site), send an email.  Can’t find contact info?  Ask for an email address in a comment.  Attacking someone publicly makes you look like a jerk.  People will ALWAYS side with the blog owner.  Regardless of who is at fault.  Other readers are there because they like the blog, and subsequently the blog owner.  They aren’t there to read mean comments.

The great thing about the blogosphere is that there are no rules.  If someone does something differently than you would, it’s not wrong, just different.  A simple suggestion is a great way to suggest a different way to accomplish the project.  Just be nice.  And don’t leave comments that have nothing to do with the post.  Especially “I’m following you.  Now come follow me.” kind of comments.  That is the best way to make sure I won’t come visit you.  I get you-can’t-make-me syndrome.  Stopping by from a blog hop?  Just say something along the lines of “Hey, stopping by from such and such blog hop.  If you’d like to come visit, you can find me here.” and leave your blog address.  If you’d like to share a link, a simple “hey, you might enjoy this post” will get the job done so much more effectively.

Ok, you know my blog peeves, what are yours…?  Is there anything on While He Was Napping you’d like to see changed?  Be honest, but please be gentle and tactful too…
ps… no promises I’ll change anything, but I just might…

Coupon Chief

So, I read on another blog, I don’t remember which one, about a site called Coupon Chief.  I had the fleeting thought “I should check that out”.  And then I promptly forgot about it as soon as Little Monkey jumped out of bed and informed me, “Mama, all done with night-night!  Get me!”  I had been summoned and precious nap time was O-V-E-R.
And then, a few days later, I got an email in my inbox asking me to review the site.  At first, I’ll be totally honest, I wasn’t terribly interested.  I try to keep advertising to a minimum on my blog.  But, it reminded me that I wanted to check the site out.  So, I did.  After looking around, I decided that this was definitely something I could get behind.  So, I agreed to the review.  Without further ado, I introduce to you couponchief.com.

This and all other images courtesy of couponchief.com
Ok, the first thing I learned is that it helps to spell “chief” correctly when you type it in the address bar.  Blond moment… too bad I’m a brunette.  Anyways.
Once I got there, I was very impressed with the layout of Coupon Chief and the sheer magnitude they cover.  There are thousands and thousands of coupons for hundreds and hundreds of stores.  Seriously.  Places I shop all the time and places I’d never even heard of before.  It’s all organized and easy to use.  They have coupon codes for just about everywhere.  But I’ll get back to that.
Coupon Chief is visually appealing.  It’s organized.  There are obvious categories and images are included.  Who doesn’t love pictures?  Coupons are organized by store and tags.
There is a section of popular coupons (which mean they probably work well) and a section of new coupons (for those who are always on the look-out for the hottest deals).

You have the option to sign up for a free account.  This allows you to upload coupons, set up alerts for your favorite stores and retailers, and you can track your browsing history.  Tracking your history is a pretty sweet feature.  No mad searches for that code you saw the other day and now you need it.  Just look it up.

If you’re an online retailer, you can sign up and add your site to Coupon Chief’s database.  What a great way to get your site some more traffic.  I’ve offered coupons in my small little Etsy shop before and I’ve had like two or three people take advantage of them.  What a waste, right?!  On Coupon Chief, people are looking for a deal, so make it easy for them to find!  Sign up is free and easy.

Ok, so that’s the home page.  That’s right, that’s just the home page.  I am no stranger to online shopping.  Some of my favorite sites include: Amazon.com, Jo-Ann.com, Hotwire.com, and Etsy shops.  Coupon Chief has coupons for all of these sites!  Their database is incredible.

That list is about 2/3 of the stores and retailers listed under “U”.  The list for “A”” is crazy long.  You’re almost guaranteed to find a coupon for what you’re looking for, regardless of what that is.  Ok, that’s all nice and great, right?  If they work.  This was the part I was a little skeptical about.  That many coupons can’t all be valid, right?  Well, some of them aren’t.  I tried a few different sites (eyebuydirect.com and joann.com) with various codes.  Like any coupon site, you may have to try a few different codes, but I eventually found a code that worked for every retailer I tried.  But, Coupon Chief will help you take some of the guess work out of the process.  They show you a featured coupon and next to coupons that have received feedback, they will tell you how often the code worked.  If it’s been a recent success, it’ll list the last date it worked.
Coupon Chief depends on feedback from it’s users, so if you do use or attempt a coupon, report on it!  It only takes a few seconds and will make your coupon searching experience go so much more smoothly.  And you can count it as your good deed of the day.

While looking at the Pottery Barn Kids site, there were coupons that applied only to certain items.  To prevent me from having to enter 37 different coupon codes, trying to find one that works, it has a link directly to the items that qualify.  It doesn’t get easier than that.  After you follow the link and check out all the goodies, you close the mini window that popped up and you’ll see this feedback box.

If you didn’t use the coupon, just ignore it.  If you did, simply click yes or no, depending on whether it worked or not.  If it worked, it’ll ask for a little more information on how and what you saved.  You then have the option of sharing your awesome score on Facebook and other social networking sites.
They also have a program that allows you to sign up to share coupon codes.  Every time one of your coupon codes is used, you get a piece of the sales.
This is definitely a site worth checking out.  Even if you don’t use them exclusively, it’s a good collection of possibilities that can save you money.  With a little time, patience and some good old determination, you’ll be well on your way to saving the big bucks when you shop online.  Check out the amazing selection of savings at couponchief.com.
Happy Shopping and Saving!

Homemade Play Dough

Have you checked out the Summer Daze Giveaways Sneak Peek?  Come find out what all the fuss is about!

I have been playing single momma for the last couple weeks.  I don’t know how you ladies do it!  Whew!  I am exhausted.  And craving conversations not about Lightning McQueen, Blanket, or trying to explain (to the wall, it seems like) why “big boys only get binkies at night-night”.  We’ve also had some cool weather again… cold enough that we’ve had to stay inside.  ICK!  Little Monkey is going stir-crazy and he is driving me up the walls!  So, I’ve been on the prowl for new things for us to do.  Recently, we tried Play Dough.  IT WAS A HUGE HIT!

Little Monkey loves it!  I strap him in his booster chair, hand him a chunk of play dough and some cookie cutters and he’s good.  For like at least half an hour.  HEAVEN!  And because he’s strapped in his booster chair, I don’t have to stand there and watch him closely for signs of mischief.  And, he’s only shirtless because we’d just had ravioli for dinner, not because the play dough is messy, ‘cause it’s not.  Wow, that was a lot of commas in that sentence (run on, much?!).  All of my past English teachers and professors would die.  =]

I have this book, titled The Toddler’s Busy Book, by Trish Kuffner.  Someone gave it to me, but I don’t remember who.  There’s also one for pre-school aged children too.

I have an abbreviated version… only 101 things to do with my toddler.  Not the 365 as claimed in the photo (which, by the way, if you click on, will take you to the source).  My favorite part of the whole book… the back has recipes for all kinds of stuff, including play dough.  Yay!

HOMEMADE PLAY DOUGH

Ingredients:
1/2 cup water
1/2 Tbs vegetable oil (I actually used olive oil, as I didn’t have vegetable oil)
1/4 cup salt
1/2 Tbs cream of tarter
Food coloring (or 1/2 tsp of cocoa – the food coloring I thought was in the cabinet, wasn’t.  Guess we left it at Grandma’s.)
Saucepan
1 cup flour

Directions:
Combine the water, oil, salt and cream of tarter in the saucepan.  Heat until warm, not hot.  Remove from heat, add about 1/4 cup of flour and mix.  When the mixture is cool enough, knead more flour into the dough until it’s not sticky.  You may need more or less than the whole cup.  Store dough in an airtight container or a zippy bag (suck the air out).

This recipe was super easy and made plenty for Little Monkey… especially since I plan to grab our food coloring the next time we’re at Grandma’s… which means more colors… which means more dough.

Here’s the message we sent to Daddy:

The cream of tarter makes this dough last 6 months, so don’t skip it if you don’t have any.  This dough is SUPER salty, but it won’t hurt your kiddos if they eat it.  And it’s so salty, they won’t eat much.  I promise.  P.S. Don’t lick the dough off your fingers.  BLEH!  Ask me how I know…  =]

The only picture I could get with him looking at the camera… you ask him “What does a nose say?”  “Honk, honk”.
