Big Hero 6 Party: Popcorn Bar

The last part of our Big Hero 6 party was a viewing of the movie. Most of our guests hadn’t seen the movie before. And what’s a movie without popcorn? Not much of a movie, in my opinion. I’ve always wanted to have a popcorn bar, so I seized the chance when it came up with our Big Hero 6 party and I am so glad I did. It was so fun, the kids loved it and I’ve been having my own little mini popcorn bars after the boys go to bed at night for about a week and a half now. The best part: it was super easy to put together.

BIG HERO 6 PARTY
POPCORN BAR

Big Hero 6 Party Popcorn Bar

Supplies:
– Popcorn (You can choose to do air popped or microwave, whatever your preference)
– Popcorn Season’s (I was super fancy and used several of Kernel Season’s blends, they were perfect and soo easy!  You could make your own – and I had plans to do so – but this is definitely a great alternative and a lot easier.  P.S. That link is an amazon affiliate link.)
Big Hero 6 Party Popcorn Bar Popcorn Seasonings
– Popcorn toppings (think movie theater candy faves – junior mints and swedish fish are my favorites)
Big Hero 6 Party Popcorn Bar Toppings
– Containers to put all your goodies in.  I used red bowls I already had for some of the popcorn toppings. I found red and purple ramekins at Dollar Tree that were perfect for some of the topping that I wanted to limit the quantities on (mostly for the kids).  I also got salt and pepper shaker sets at Dollar Tree.
– Chocolate Pro Electric Melting Pot (amazon affiliate link) or small crock pot
– Butter
– Brown paper bags
– Permanent marker

Directions:
Pretty much all you have to do is set everything out, buffet-style, ready to eat.  My favorite was the butter.  Weird, I know.  It worked really well to put it in my Chocolate Pro on warm.  It stayed melted and it was quick and easy to make refills on popcorn.

Big Hero 6 Party Popcorn Bar Keeping Butter Melted

We had brown paper bags to put the popcorn in that we wrote each kiddo’s name on a Baymax sticker that I just printed up.  They worked really well, except they were kind of loud during the movie.  It didn’t bother me that much – I have the movie practically memorized at this point and I’m used to ignoring the background noise of children, hehe.  Mr Napping commented on it though.  We only had two little boys dump the bags out, Little J being one of them.  Silly boys.  It wasn’t anything the vacuum couldn’t make quick work of before bed though.

The popcorn bar was my very favorite part of our party.  We will be doing more movie nights this summer.  I’m hopeful we can do at least a couple outside!  The popcorn bar will be making more appearances at our house.  It was easy, it was delicious and it was the perfect way to end our night and the party.

Big Hero 6 Science Lab: 3 Experiments Kids Will Love

For our Big Hero 6 Party, I had grand plans, too grand, it turned out.  We didn’t actually get to these Big Hero 6 Science activities as I’d planned.  I didn’t get set up done as early as I’d hoped and was finishing the last things as people were showing up.  I’m terrible at timing sometimes.  I had hoped the parents would jump in and do this with the kids, but apparently that wasn’t quite clear and we only got one experiment done before we were ready to eat and watch the movie.  The kids were loving the Build A Baymax station anyway.  That’s okay.  Just means we’ll have to have another play date.  I thought I’d still post it with the rest of the Big Hero 6 Party Ideas though.

BIG HERO 6 SCIENCE
EXPERIMENTS KIDS WILL LOVE

Big Hero 6 Science Experiments

These experiments are all pretty basic, don’t require any strange supplies, and still have the wow factor.  Perfect for kids ages 3 to 7, these are safe enough the kids can do them (or at least help) with the experiments.  There’s three, so I’ll break them down one at a time.  Rather than type out the directions again, I will just show you the photos and link to where you can print out your own set.

Wasabi’s Magic Magnetic Pepper

Supplies:
– Salt
– Pepper
– Comb
– Saucer or small container

Set Up: Print off the Wasabi’s Magic Magnetic Pepper instructions, so you’ll have them for the experiment.

Big Hero 6 Science Experiment

Honey Lemon’s Chem Bottle

Supplies:
– 1/4 cup lemon juice in a clean water bottle
– baking soda
– balloons
– funnel

Set Up:
– Put 1/4 cup of lemon juice in each water bottle.  I had enough bottles for each child, so they all got their own.  I also didn’t want to have to deal with measuring out the lemon juice on my (carpeted) dining room floor.  So, I did it beforehand.
– Print off the directions for Honey Lemon’s Chem Bottle so you’ll have them to refer to during your experiment.

Big Hero 6 Science Experiment

This is the experiment we actually did get to do and the kids LOVED it.  You can increase the baking soda and lemon juice levels to create a larger reaction and fill the balloon more.  You can also substitute the lemon juice with vinegar.  That was my original plan, but I discovered I was out of vinegar about 30 minutes before the party.  Awesome.  The lemon juice still worked just fine though.

Fred’s Invisible Ink Secret Message

Supplies:
– Small container of lemon juice (I used the little red cups)
– Q-Tips
– Scrap paper
– Lamp

Set Up: Plug the lamp in so the bulb is warm.  Warn the kids that the lamp will be hot and not to touch it!  Print off the directions for Fred’s Invisible Ink Secret Message.

Big Hero 6 Science Experiment

Do you have a little scientist that loves to do science experiments?  These are fun to do even if you aren’t having a Big Hero 6 Party!

Bringing Innovation With 8 Ways to Live Green + DIY Lip Balm

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. Cross my heart, all opinions are 100% mine alone. #BringingInnovation #CollectiveBias

Happy St Patrick’s Day!  Big J loves this holiday, green is his favorite color!  So, let’s talk green today.  What does it really mean to “live green”?  It’s funny, because I don’t think there is one solid right answer to that question.  There isn’t a list of things you need to check off before you can say, “Yeah, we love that we live green.”  It’s more of an idea.  The idea that everyone does their best to live a cleaner, less industrial-dependent life.  And what that means for my family doesn’t necessarily apply to or fit your family.  And that’s okay.  You do your best and we’ll do ours.  Would you like to know about five ways that my family lives green?

8 WAYS TO LIVE GREEN

Energizer EcoAdvanced Bringing Innovation 8 Ways to Live Green

1. Use NEW Energizer EcoAdvanced Recycled Batteries.  We are a household full of toys and electronics.  From TV remotes, toys, battery-operated night lights, sound machines, the flashlight on my keys, Our door lock, our baby monitors, they all have batteries.  Or, at least, the option to operate on batteries, which makes these items super convenient if we travel with them.  We use a fair amount of batteries.  I was thrilled to be able to get these new Energizer EcoAdvanced recycled batteries at Wal-Mart.

Energizer EcoAdvanced Bringing Innovation Recycled Batteries Walmart

These are the first batteries on the market made with recycled materials.  They are also “Energizer’s longest lasting alkaline ever” and they hold power for up to 12 years in storage.  Perfect batteries to keep in your emergency kits!  Available in both AA and AAA sizes.  Get more info at BringingInnovation.net.

2. Grow your own food.  You won’t have to worry about pesticides and questionable growth methods.  You’ll know exactly what was in the soil, how long ago your produce was harvested and there’s just something satisfying about eating food you’ve grown yourself.  Don’t have a lot of space?  Don’t worry, me neither.  Container gardening is a great way to explore gardening without dedicating a lot of permanent space to your efforts.

3. Go Paperless.  Most companies offer online billing now and many banks offer services that will send your payment automatically or remind you that it’s due.  You save trees, your house will be less cluttered with papers and the landfills will have less paper sitting around waiting to decompose.  It’s a win-win all the way around.
Are you a list keeper, like me?  While I haven’t yet been able to give up my paper lists completely, I do use my mobile devices to keep track of things more now.  It’s too easy to leave a list at home on the counter or misplace it.  But it’s far less likely I will leave home without my phone or tablet or misplace it somewhere.  And if I do, I can have Mr Napping call it.  Can’t call a paper list…

Energizer EcoAdvanced Bringing Innovation Go Paperless

4. Re-use old containers.  Use them to help you organize.  You can even reuse some containers for container gardening.  We get animal crackers from Costco, partly because I love using the containers to hold my boys’ toys.  They are big enough to hold all kinds of toys.  It keeps us more organized and we’re reusing something that would end up in the trash (or the recycle bin).

bringing-innovation-living-green-upcycled-toy-storage

5. Speaking of recycle bins… Use them!  Recycle whenever possible.  Our city offers recycling pick up to it’s residents every two weeks.  Many stores will collect plastic grocery sacks and recycle them for you.  You just have to drop them off at the donation box on your way in the store.  Cardboard boxes, newspapers, glass bottles, plastic containers can all be recycled.  Find out where the drop offs are located in your area.  We don’t make a huge effort to recycle everything we can, but we do put our cans in a box under the sink instead of the trash.  The box gets emptied every two weeks into the bins below.  You can even turn in cans and plastic bottles for money in some places.  It won’t pay your mortgage, but it’s a pretty easy way to earn a few extra bucks.

Energizer EcoAdvanced Bringing Innovation Recycle Bins

6. Re-fashion old clothes.  This is one of my favorites.  I had a pair of old jeans that just didn’t fit right.  Somewhere between having two babies, they no longer flattered and they were not very comfortable either.  Instead of just throwing them out or donating them (also a good option!) I was able to make them in to a fun skirt.  I didn’t have to spend a penny and I got to add the item back to my wardrobe.

Bringing-Innovation-living-green-Jeans-to-Lacey-Skirt

7. Make your own cleaning products.  There are some powerful, family-friendly cleansers right in your cupboard.  Vinegar is one of my absolute favorites to clean with.  It does a great job and it’s safe for my kids.  I can wash off the toys and I don’t have to worry about them licking them before they are dry.  True story.  That used to be an actual worry of mine.  Baking soda is a great cleaner too.  I use it and citric acid in my DIY toilet fizzers to keep our hard water swamp monsters at bay in the bathrooms.  Hydrogen peroxide is fantastic in the laundry room.

Bringing-Innovation-living-green-diy toilet-fizzers

8. Make your own bath and beauty products.  I started making my own chapstick about three years ago and I haven’t bought a single tube since.  I love knowing exactly what’s in it: two, or maybe three, ingredients and that’s it, and I can even pronounce them all!  Except Jojoba – sometimes, that one trips me up, it’s all the “j’s”.  Anyway, making your own lip balm is incredibly easy.  Are ready for a little mini tutorial?

Ingredients:
– Kitchen Scale
– Small Pot
– Small Measuring Glass (Wal-Mart has an Anchor brand measuring glass that I use and it works really well – find it in the Kitchen stuff)
– Empty chapstick tubes or other containers to hold your balm.
– Medicine Syringe or Pipette
– 0.5 oz Pure Beeswax
– 0.75 oz Coconut Oil
– 0.5 oz Jojoba Oil (this is optional, but helps extend shelf life.  You can also substitute liquid Vitamin E.)
– 2-3 drops of essential oils (completely optional and it’s still awesome without them)

bringing-innovation-living-green-diy-lip-balm

Directions:

– Fill the small pot about a quarter full with warm water.

– Put your beeswax and oils in the measuring glass.  Put the measuring glass, full of the oils and wax, in the small pot of water.  Make sure NO water gets into the oils!

bringing-innovation-living-green-diy-lipbalm

– Put the pot on the stove on low-med heat and let the wax melt.  Watch the water level in the pot, you don’t want it to all boil away.  Stir the wax and oils with a sterile plastic spoon or a wooden skewer to combine the wax and oils evenly.  Let the spoon or skewer cool and test the texture of your chapstick. Just rub a little on your lips.  I’ve made (literally) hundreds of tubes of lip balm and I always have to make small adjustments.  If it’s softer than you like, add a little more wax.  If it’s too hard, add some more coconut oil.  Mr Napping likes his a little more firm because he carries them in his pocket.

– Once the wax is melted, use the syringe or pipette to transfer the melted wax into the containers you’re using to hold your balm.

bringing-innovation-living-green-diy-lipbalm

– Let the wax solidify COMPLETELY before you use it!  It will be HOT.  Usually a couple hours is plenty, but you could wait 3-4 hours if you’re worried about it.  If it cools and isn’t the texture you like, just pull it out of the tube, re-melt it and add a little more oil or wax.  It’s almost difficult to mess this up.  Just don’t get water in the oil.

* These quantities make approximately 12 tubes of chap stick, actual quantity depends on size of tubes and how full you fill them.  I keep my extra tubes in the fridge until we’re ready for them.  It helps extend shelf life.  Because when you have this many tubes of chap stick, extending shelf life is a good thing.

Bacon Ranch Dip and Chips

In this house of boys, we have our share of sports fans.  We have balls of every shape, size and sport scattered around our home.  My boys are always “shooting baskets” with just about anything that can be tossed: garbage in the trash can, socks in the laundry basket, shoes in the closet.  You get the idea. One of their favorites is snacks in their mouth and this Bacon Ranch Dip is a bug winner!

And it’s so, so easy. Seriously. It takes 10 minutes to put together. Perfect even for busy and last minute snacks or appetizers. Make this Bacon Ranch Dip tonight!

The perfect tangy dip to compliment a fabulous chip. White Cheddar flavored chips recommended for a great flavor compliment.

  • 1 bunch Green Onions
  • 2-3 oz Real Bacon Bits

BACON RANCH DIP IS PERFECT FOR… EVERYTHING!

This dip is awesome with a cheese flavored cracker. We REALLY like a white cheddar flavor and the ranch is the perfect compliment for that. So tasty! But, you can use any chip. My husband really likes it with his favorite tortilla chips.

This Bacon Ranch Dip does need to be kept refrigerated because of the sour cream in it. But, you can make it in a plastic container with a lid and throw it in a cooler with some ice and take with you – to the lake or camping or even just a backyard BBQ.

GameDaySnacks Bacon Ranch Dip Cheez It Grooves

I love that it is really quick and you can make it up in advance if you’re going to be having a party and need ready to go foods. Make this up as much as 1-2 days in advance and just mix well before serving.

Also, it’s super yummy on potatoes. Just saying.

Who creates this awesomeness?  I’m glad you asked.  I’d like to introduce Amy, owner of GoneGirly on Etsy.  She has some amazing etched glassware designs, and among my favorites are the pi plates.  This is what Amy has to say about her work:

I distinctly remember a childhood Christmas gift – stickers with my name on them. It is the only gift I can remember from that year. I think we can all relate to that feeling of a special gift, one picked out just for you. That’s what we do at GoneGirly. Everything comes with full customization of images, fonts and text. Designer engraved bakeware is a great gift for someone just starting out while simultaneously an “AH-HA!” gift for that MIL who has everything. At gatherings, you’ll never argue over what dish belongs to whom. As one customer put it, “At thanksgiving this year my MIL will not be able steal my wife’s deep dish pie plates and send her home with the shallow ones as she has in the past..”

All our dishes are still oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe (HECK YEAH!). I do all the deign work myself and do not limit changes or re-workups – I’m not happy until you’re looking at exactly what you want. We are also fast! We ship within 5 days of your order – provided you’ve approved your design. Custom orders and ideas are always welcome.

With over 250 items listed in her shop, Amy is sure to have something that will fit everyone.  And, if not, she has already invited you to make a custom order and get exactly what you want.  I personally own several of Amy’s products and they are awesome.  The cutting board below is sitting in my cutting board drawer right this very second.  The quality is amazing, the customer service is awesome and she is FAST!

So, you want one right?!  Well, guess what?!  Amy has graciously agreed to give one of you lucky people your math-themed pie plate of choice!  Use the rafflecopter form below to enter for you chance to win!  Giveaway will close on March 29, 2015 at 11:59pm PDT.  Winner will be randomly chosen with Rafflecopter and contacted on Monday, March 30.  Winner has 24 hours to claim prize or a new winner will be chosen.  Giveaway is open worldwide, but international winners will need to cover shipping costs (approximately $32 USD).
