Summer Style for {the breastfeeding} Momma

It’s been a while since I did any kind of fashion post.  I had a couple planned while I was pregnant, but I was not a fashionable pregnant momma this last time.  I stuck to yoga pants, low rise jeans and lots and lots of sweatshirts (it was winter after all), but it was far from fashionable.  However, I have some of my sense of individuality and fashion back and I want more from my summer wardrobe than knit pants and t-shirts.

I’m gonna talk boobs today.  More specifically, breastfeeding-friendly clothing.  Breastfeeding and I have a love/hate relationship.  While I totally love the time to bond with baby during the first few months, that’s about where the love ends.  I really don’t enjoy breastfeeding.  It’s painful at first and an annoyance later on.  Stopping every three to five hours, all day, everyday, for a 30 minute feeding sesh… if junior is a quick eater… is more of a time suck (pardon the pun) than you may realize.  Baby N will be three months old on June 2.  (Wait… what?  When did that happen?!  Gosh, it goes fast.)  Anyway, how many hours do you think I’ve spent feeding him over the past 3 months?  Guesses?  Well, let me give you a hint and rephrase the question: how many days do you think I’ve spent feeding him?  SEVEN.  ONE WEEK.  Can you imagine sitting around for a week with someone attached to your chest?  Think of all the things I could have gotten done in that time!  {Hmm… future post? =) “How to multi-task with a babe latched on”}

Okay, so that’s a lot of time.  With my first two – I nursed Big J for seven weeks and Little J for eight months – I didn’t have any special clothing or nursing tops.  I just made do with what I had.  And that was about it, they worked well enough.  But it was anything but convenient.  I often had to take my whole sleeve off to feed my baby.  Not an easy thing to do discreetly in public.  We’re talking about converting my tops to a single shoulder shirt (that also completely exposed my breast) while Little J ate his fill.  Definitely not discreet.  This time around I decided that if I was going to spend that much time with my boobs hanging out, it was going to be as convenient as possible.  These are pieces that will make your summer style functional as well as fashionable.

My must-have breastfeeding clothing:
– Nursing Tanks.  I have two of these.  I am about two weeks of AdSense earnings from getting more.  They are amazing.  The strap clasps make it easy to get to “the goods” without removing my entire top.  They are easy to layer under t-shirts, sweatshirts, cardigans, polos… you name it.  I found a two pack at H&M.  They are great quality and since they are a two-fer, each tank is nearly half the price of the ones I was finding everywhere else.  The cons are they only had black and white in my size and in stock availability seems to fluctuate a lot.  Great neutrals, but pretty boring.  Also, they had a shelf bra built in and my girls are always too big for them.  These ones were tight enough I was worried it would decrease my milk supply.  Seriously.  I didn’t notice that the clasp straps were attached to the shelf bra when I cut it out… whoops.  I had to stitch the strap back to the body of the tank.  Not a big deal, but a little inconvenient in my busy schedule, being down to one tank until I found time to fix the other was frustrating… and maybe a bit unhygienic for that first week home.  I’m sure my husband loved that.  Check the site often to snag your size if you’re on the small end of the sizing scale.  Those sizes seem to be hard to come by.

– Nursing tops.  My sister-in-law turned me on to these tops while she was breastfeeding my niece last year.  The thing I liked the most was the pull-up shelf could double as a cover when my boob was out.  Nursing in public is a total snap in these tops.  You almost don’t even need a cover; I usually use one anyway, just to help keep prying and curious eyes where they should be… which is not waiting for a little peeksy.  I have five of these tops, also from H&M… although slightly different than the one pictured.  Life savers.  My only complaint is that the necks are really wide and it’s hard to keep my bra straps from peeking out.  I can usually pair them with a light cardigan and the issue is solved.
– Cardigans.  Or button up tops.  Or low cut polos.  These all serve the same purpose.  They are easy to open and let the girls poke out for that quick feeding.  Pair it with a nursing tank and you’re sure to stay covered when you need to be, but with a quick unhook and sliding to the side of the shirt you’re ready to feed that starving babe.  The bonus to the cardigan or button down is that you can use it to cover a little more.  And with the tank straps that unhook, your back stays covered up too (because no one wants to see my glow-in-the-dark, squishy post-baby belly… yeesh).  All of these items can still be worn post-breastfeeding era too (because even if you only breastfeed a few months, it will feel like an eternity).  I am a fan of the cardigan… and I prefer it have buttons to help hide the aforementioned muffin top I can’t seem to banish. I also like long sleeves that can be pushed up or pulled down, but there are short sleeve options as well.

– Deep V-Neck shirts or low scoop neck.  These pair fabulously with the nursing tanks too.  You can skip the tank, but the girls might experience a wardrobe malfunction or two… full boobs are heavy boobs and nursing bras don’t usually have underwire.  Sometimes, they meet in the middle more than you’d like.  Ah, the infamous uni-boob.  So, unless you want Pamela Anderson cleavage, the tank can help keep things covered and maybe separated a little too.  Choose a deep V with enough stretch in the material (knits are a fabulous choice) to slide to the side and provide easy access.  I miss my underwires…

– Leggings.  These are a momma-essential (and not at all exclusive to the breastfeeding) if you wear skirts or dresses a lot.  I attend church weekly and constantly find myself sitting on the floor to play with the littles, sitting cross-legged (very un-ladylike in a dress…) for support while I nurse and chasing little escape artists.  With a pair of leggings under my skirts and dresses I can acquiesce to these demands without worrying that I’m playing a little more peek-a-boo than I want too.

If you only splurge on one item for your nursing wardrobe, make it the nursing clasp tanks.  They are so versatile, easy to pair with just about everything and make nursing a cinch.  You can even still wear your regular t-shirts, blouses and even sweatshirts while you nurse with the tanks.  Simply lift the outer layer up and unhook the clasps.  And your top layer is a little cover so your entire breast isn’t just hang out there.

I am all for modesty, but I don’t feel like my baby should have to eat with a blanket over his head.  It’s hot, distracting and can be difficult to hold on to the baby and the blanket.  The common argument of “how would you like to eat with a blanket over your head?” holds some validity in my mind.  However, with three boys of my own, I don’t really want nursing women just flopping their breasts out at the park or kid’s museum either, especially as my boys get older.  These clothing options seem to be the best ways to conveniently breastfeed and keep my girls out of the spotlight at feeding times.

Do you have any nursing-friendly suggestions?

Summer Reads: Awesome Books That Have Been Made Into Great Movies

Photos and links in this post may be affiliate links.  I will get a (teeny tiny) portion from any purchase made through these links.  Your total cost is not affected in any way.  Thanks for any support you choose to give While He Was Napping.

I love to read, always have.  More often than not, I spent my weekends and summers growing up with a book nestled in my hands.  Motherhood has left me with a lot less time for it, but I still really enjoy it.  I recently finished reading the Divergent series by Veronica Roth.  I’m slow to get on the bandwagon, I know.  I loved the series though.  I was so excited about it that I only finished the first book before I pawned my kids off on my momma, kidnapped my husband from work and we hit up the new Luxury+IMAX Theater for a matinee of the movie based on the book.  The theater was amazing… full size recliners (no lie on the Luxury title), a huge screen (and it wasn’t even one of the IMAX screens) and the sound was great.  But, the movie was a little disappointing.  Actually, I was really disappointed.  The book was so good and the movie was meh, okay, I guess.  I hate when that happens!  I won’t go into all the reasons I was disappointed, but there were a lot.

So, I’ve come up with a list of books-made-into-movies that didn’t disappoint (at least, not me).  If you haven’t seen any of these, put them on your summer bucket list now!  You can make the call on reading the book first or not.  Titles marked with an asterisk (*) are suitable to read with kids too!

1. Hunger Games.  I was slow to jump on this bandwagon too and read these books shortly after Little J was born.  I liked the books.  I liked them a lot.  I did not love them.  Maybe that’s one reason that I also really enjoyed the movie.  It followed the story line well, the characters were true to their literary portrayal and the visual effects were amazing.  Both the first and second movies were good, I was not left disappointed or unsatisfied when the credits started rolling.  Definitely a couple good movies to see.  Hopefully the last two movies will be just as good.

2. Harry Potter.  I liked all the Harry Potter movies.  The fourth one was probably the one that fell short of my hopes, but it was still good.  There was a lot in the fourth book to shove into a 2.5 hour movie.  Again, the plot line followed the books (mostly) and the visuals were fantastic.  The first couple books would be fun to read with grade school kids, but the series gets darker the further you go and might be better for an older audience.

3. The Help.  I enjoy historical fiction and The Help was no exception.  My biggest complaint was the grammar in the book.  I am a bit of a Grammar Nazi and reading the incorrect grammar was hard at first, but I powered on and I’m so glad I did.  I saw this movie and then read the book.  If the movie hadn’t been so enjoyable I would have stopped reading the book without much effort to get past the grammar.  But it was so good.

4.  The Great Gatsby.  This is the only book on this list where I liked the movie better than the book.  I tried really hard to really love this book.  I read it first in high school and it was okay.  I read it again last summer and I was right, it was good, but it didn’t change my life.  The movie, however, I really enjoyed.  I don’t know why though.  I’m not sure if the book was clouded by a couple discussions I remember from high school about the Optometrist’s billboard, but I expected that to be a lot more important than it seemed on my last reading.  Or maybe I’m not as in-depth a reader as I once was…?  In any case, that was a little anti-climactic when nothing much ever came out of it.  I would watch this movie again today.  However, I don’t need to read the book again any time too soon.

5.  The Notebook.  If you want a sappy chick flick, The Notebook is a winner.  I’ve read several of Nicholas Sparks’ books and this one is very near the top of my favorites.  Who can say no to a timeless love story like that of Noah and Allie?  And besides, there’s the Ryan Gosling eye candy factor as well in the film.  Call up the girls, send the guys out and get a box of tissues.

6.  The Princess Bride.  This is one of my favorite movies.  And the book is even better.  This story has everything.  Adventure, mystery, rescue, sword fights, damsels in distress, gypsies, an evil six-fingered man, pirates and romance.  There is something for everyone in this story… yes, it’s that good.

7.  The Book Thief.  I am reading this now and I’m loving it.  The movie was fantastic and made me want to read the book.  What can go wrong when Death is the narrator…?  Knowing the ending (uhm, here’s your hint: it’s set in WWII) isn’t making me enjoy the story any less.  It’s very well written and I am reading it when I should be folding laundry… “Sorry, boys, but your underwear will just have to be wrinkled this week.  Momma’s reading.”

8.  *Holes.  My mom tried to convince me to read this when I was younger and I was just not interested.  I did read it in high school though and enjoyed it (although my teacher nit-picked it to death and I was tired of it by the time we finally moved on).  It’s a good story and a pretty quick read.  The movie was entertaining and tame enough for my younger siblings too.  A decent flick for family night.

9.  *The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.  The firsts in the Chronicles of Narnia series, both as literature and film, are excellent.  If my boys were a little older, I’d read it to/with them this summer.  The movie plot follows the book plot on all the important points and the actors fit the characters well.  (That was one of my complaints with Divergent.)  I will probably hold off showing the movie to my kids for a few years (because I really don’t need either of them claiming there’s an Ice Queen in the closet at 4am), but older kiddos would enjoy both the movie and book as well.

10.  *Bridge to Terabithia.  I first read this in elementary school (3rd or 4th grade maybe).  When the movie came out, I went back and read it again.  It was probably one of the first books I read that didn’t end in sunshine and rainbows.  I was a little sheltered and I remember it surprised me that not all stories end with “happily ever after”.  Nonetheless, I loved the book, even at a young age.  The movie isn’t quite as awesome, but it comes close.  As the credits rolled, I thought “that was a good movie”.  I was satisfied and that’s all I ask for in a movie adapted from a book.

11.  Phantom of the Opera.  I want to see this on Broadway so bad.  But, at this point, I’m stuck with Hollywood.  The text got a little wordy at times, but I really enjoyed reading it for the most part.  Hollywood’s version does the story justice in just a couple hours.  I might have been more disappointed if the cast hadn’t done so well with the music.  Definitely worth a watch and a good read if you want something with some depth.  It’s a good story.

12.  The Bourne Series.  I read the first Bourne book the summer after I got married, mostly because it was about the only book we owned that I was vaguely interested in and hadn’t read a hundred times before, give or take.  Wink, wink.  Guess what?  I liked it.  Enough to read the others.  And the movies are one I can watch with Mr. Napping.  Score.

13.  *How to Train Your Dragon.  This is that rare anomaly.  The book and the movie are two completely different stories, with barely the character’s names in common, but both of the Dragon film and text are good stories!  The book is definitely aimed more toward older boys (8-12ish) but it was still a good read and Big J (4.5) enjoyed it and understood the large majority of it.  The movie is a favorite in our house and who can resist that awkward Viking and graceful dragon friendship?  We are so excited for the 2nd movie this summer.

14. *Mr. Popper’s Penguin’s.  When I was in grade school, my teacher read this book aloud to the class.  When the movie was made a few years ago, I didn’t think they’d even come close to the magic of the book.  I re-read the book before we saw it and it was funny that I remembered the book being more magical than it was, but I also found the movie quite charming.  I found myself at a happy medium and liked the movie nearly as well as the book.

15.  *The Lorax.  While the movie has a predominant “save the trees” theme (which is fine – I’m much more middle ground on this issue than most people), the awesome music and lovable characters saved it from an overwhelming “save the Earth” vibe.  I liked the movie, my kids love it and the book is a classic.  Who couldn’t use a little reminder every so often to be a little more self-conscious and less wasteful?  And who can resist that bushy, yellow mustache?

Do you have any favorite books?  List them in the comments.  I’m always looking for suggestions!

Seasoned Red Potatoes {in Half the Time}

This is one of my favorite BBQ foods.  I love red potatoes.  And I really love them roasted. But that can take 30-45 minutes, depending on your oven, which is fine… Unless you are also baking rolls and they need the oven too.  And even on the grill, it will take at least 20-30 minutes, but that takes up valuable grill space for those steaks. So, here’s an easy way to speed up the oven cooking time and still get that yummy roasted flavor.

SEASONED RED POTATOES
{IN HALF THE TIME}

Ingredients:
– 4-6 red potatoes, washed and diced
– 1 tsp dill weed

– 1 tsp garlic powder
This post was written by Krista and originally appeared on While He Was Napping.

– 1 tsp rosemary
– 1/2 tsp seasoned salt (I will often substitute this with John’s Steak and Seasoning.  We put this stuff on EVERYTHING)
– Approximately 2-3 Tbsp olive oil in a small bowl

Directions:
– Preheat the oven to 450F.
– Steam the diced potatoes in a microwave steamer for 6-8 minutes until tender.  You don’t want them to fall apart, but you want them pretty close to the softness you like them, not real firm.
– Line a baking sheet with foil and use a marinade brush to put a thin layer of olive oil on the foil.
– Spread the steamed potatoes on the foil and brush the tops with olive oil.
– Sprinkle the seasonings on the tops of the potatoes.
– Bake the potatoes for 10-15 minutes.
– Remove from oven, place on a serving tray to cool. Serve.

Serves: 4-6

DIY Chocolate Strawberry & Truffle Bouquet

Sometimes, food can be the best gift.  Especially if you’re giving a treat.  Admittedly, getting a can of green beans or black olives probably wouldn’t have the same appeal as chocolate does…  I particularly have a thing for treats dipped in chocolate.  Fondue is my often my calorie splurge and I’ve got the extra padding to prove it… how long can I claim it as “baby fat” – it took 9 months to put it on, so I get 9 months to take it off, right?

Anyway, I combined my love of chocolate and some delicious strawberries to make a fun little gift for my sister-in-law for Mother’s Day.  She likes chocolate too, so it was a hit.  Ever priced a berry bouquet?  They aren’t cheap, but I pulled mine together for under $10.  These are my kind of flowers…

CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY & TRUFFLE BOUQUET
Chocolate-Strawberry-Bouquet-Labeled1
There are two parts to this project.  I will tell you how to make the bouquet flowers first and then give the instructions on the up-cycled vase.
BOUQUET
Ingredients:
– 12 large to medium Strawberries, washed and dried
– Almond Bark or Dipping Chocolate
– 12 Wooden Skewers, cut to various lengths

– Floral Tape
– Paper cups or floral foam to stick the skewers in while your chocolate berries harden
– Pre-packaged chocolate truffles.  I cheated and used Godiva truffles rather than making them.

Directions:
– Wrap the skewers with the floral tape.  Start at one end and wrap at a diagonal all the way down the skewer, pulling the tape tightly as you go.  Don’t pull too tight, just keep it taut.  Press the tape down on itself to seal it when you reach the other end.
– Melt the chocolate in 20-30 second increments in the microwave until it’s mostly all melted.  Don’t overheat it or it will get grainy.  Stir vigorously to melt the last few lumps.
– Stick a strawberry on a skewer and dip it in the melted chocolate.  Rotate the skewer to even coat the berry.
– Poke the skewer into an overturned paper cup or the floral foam so the berry isn’t touching anything while the chocolate hardens.
– Repeat for each berry.
– Stick a skewer in the end of your truffles.  I just untwisted one end, stuck the skewer inside the wrapper and into the truffle and then twisted the wrapper back up around the skewer.  Worked great.

UPCYCLED TIN CAN VASE
Materials:
– Scrapbook paper
– Clean, empty tin can
– Tape
– Dried beans, rocks, glass marbles and such to use as filler in your vase
– Additional decor – like my heart skewers
– A Flower Frog (or Washi Tape – if you want to use Martha’s awesome cheat to help with holding up your arrangement)

Directions:
– Measure the can and cut a piece of scrapbook paper to fit around it.
– Use the tape to secure the paper where the edges overlap.
– Fill the can with your beans, rocks or whatever filler you are using.
– Set your flower frog in the bottom of the can or tape a grid across the mouth of the can with your washi tape to help hold your arrangement in place.  If I’d had more time, I would have used the tape to decorate the can more so the tails from the grid on top wouldn’t have looked as out of place.  But my recipient walked in as I was still arranging the bouquet…
– Arrange the berries and other skewered goodies in your vase.

Gift and watch the smiles… unless you eat them first.  Then just enjoy those yummy berries and chocolate.

{Printable} “Daddy Days” Daddy Date Jar

Father’s Day is coming up… here’s an idea that your kiddos can give to daddy.  How about some quality time together?

This project is PERFECT! Depending on your kids, they might even be able to do this all by themselves!

One of the things I looked for when I was a huntin’ for a husband was a guy who would play with our kids. So, when I invited the future Mr Napping to a family reunion lunch one Saturday and he played, wrestled, and tolerantly put up with being the jungle gym to my cousins’ kids, I was pretty much a smitten kitten.

I knew he’d be a good daddy and wouldn’t be afraid to get in touch with his inner child if (when) our babies came along.  He still makes every effort to spend quality time with all our boys. He does everything from just taking them with him when he runs errands to launching paper rockets, bike rides and wrestling. And my kids absolutely adore their dad. For that, I am blessed.

So, we’re putting together a Daddy Days Jar that Big J and Little J (The J’s?) can give Daddy for Father’s Day.  I had them tell me things they wanted to do with Dad and then made up slips of paper and we put them in a jar.

And guess what? Since I’m super nice I’ve got the printable for you to download.

All you have to do to make your own Daddy Days Jar is download, print, cut, fold and stuff into a jar.  There are 12 activities – one for each month – and a jar label/tag.  Most of the activities are ones that can take as long as your guys want them to, whether it’s an hour or two or the whole day.  Most of the activities are ones any kid would like.

If you would like more activities to choose from, there is an expanded version that includes 54 activity ideas, plus the template to create your own favorite activity strips in my Etsy shop.

“DADDY DAYS” DAD & CHILD DATE ACTIVITIES GIFT

MATERIALS NEEDED TO MAKE A DADDY DAYS JAR:

– Clean Jar or Other Container
– Printer
– Scissors or Paper Cutter
– Tape or twine to attach the tag/label to your jar
– Daddy Days Activity Printable
Don’t forget you can customize your jar even more with 54 activity idea strips in the EXPANDED version available in my Etsy Shop!

CREATE YOUR OWN DADDY DAYS JAR:

– Download and print the Daddy Days Activity printable from one of the links above.
– Cut the activities apart around the colored boxes.
– Fold each activity and put it in the jar.
– Adhere the tag with tape to the jar or punch a hole in it and tie it with twine.

That’s it.  Easy peasy and you’ve got yourself a Father’s Day gift to check off your to-do list.  Even better, if your kids can handle a pair of scissors, all you have to do is print out the page for them.  Let them do the rest!

If 12 idea strips aren’t quite enough or you would like more or different activities to choose from, check out the EXPANDED version of the Daddy Days Jar – with 54 activities and a blank template – available in my Etsy Shop. Use the code DADSROCK until 6/19/2016 for 20% off!
