I Got Two Things to Say…

First… Photobucket – Stop being broken!  Sorry about some of the images on my blog.  Apparently Photobucket is having some problems and supposedly they should be fixed soon.  However, the estimated repair date and time they posted have come and gone.  And I’m all kinds of cynical about repair people at this point.  Which doesn’t help Photobucket much.  So, hang in there with me and, hopefully, this will be resolved soon!  If it doesn’t get fixed, I’ll be doing a lot of fix-it in the blogosphere too.  Story of my life recently.

Second… and waay better than the first:  CONGRATULATIONS to Amy at Increasingly Domestic!  She won the free ad space from the Weekend Wander giveaway!  YAY AMY!  You should all go check her out, she’s AWESOME.

Ok, so I have three things to say.  Third.  I was thinking about the 1000 Followers Giveaway and wondered if you would rather have several, smaller giveaways or one big one.  It is pretty darn apparent from the poll at the top of my blog that you guys, uhm gals, gals and guys?  Uh, whatever… all of you want a giveaway extravaganza.  So, as soon as I’m not living in three different places and out of 800 boxes, we’ll get the giveaways under way.  I’m hoping next week-ish!?  It’s the same prizes either way, just with the smaller giveaways you have to share the prize.  OR you have more of a chance of winning a piece of the prize.  Depends on if your a glass half full or half empty kinda girl.  Or guy.

Ok, so quick recap:  Photobucket = broken.  Sorry.  Repair people are not on my good list right now.  Amy has her awesome blog button in the side bar for 4 weeks, YAY Amy!  1000 Follower Giveaways will be coming soon, so stay on the look out.

Have an awesome night!  And check out how to clean your dishwasher…

Keep It Clean: Washing Your Dishwasher

Ok, I like having a way to organize my posts… All of my cleaning posts will now be under the label “Keep It Clean”.  Just thought I’d throw you a heads up on the new label.

So, does washing your dishwasher sound a little redundant?  In order to keep your dishwasher running well, it’s a good idea to clean it every so often.  I have spent the last few days washing, almost literally, every dish we own BY HAND.  A year in storage left a layer of dirt and bleh on them.  At this very moment, I HATE washing dishes!  We finally got hot water yesterday so at least now I can finish things up with the dishwasher.  Boy, have I come to appreciate the dishwasher!  Which got me thinking I better make sure I take care of it.  Here’s what Mrs. Clean has this to say about cleaning your dishwasher:

We don’t always take the time to scrape and rinse food from plates and bowls before putting them into the dishwasher. Tiny bits of food, grease and soap scum cling together and are deposited in corners of the dishwasher and in crevices around the door. After a time, they can accumulate significantly and become a problem with appearance and odor.

Eww.  Right?  It’s easy to clean your dishwasher and will be a great thing in the long run.  Plus, your house will smell better.

Here’s the How:

1)  You can clean the outside of your dishwasher with hot, soapy water and a sponge or dish rag.  Use a toothbrush or cotton swabs to clean around the dials, buttons, knobs, hinges and other small and hard to reach spots.  You’ll be surprised how much gunk gathers there.

dishwashers

2)  Scrub down the inside of the door with a mild abrasive.  Baking soda, anyone?  Gently pull the rubber seal back and clean under there with your toothbrush.  A lot of times, that is where the odor is coming from.  Use your toothbrush again on the soap dispenser and the “Jet Dry” compartment.  Just clean the outside of the compartment.  Use some soapy water to clean the hinges and bottom of the door.  You may need an abrasive pad or your toothbrush for that.

3)  Take the bottom rack out and set it aside.  Although out of reach of curious toddlers that want to ride it…  Check around the drain for things that may clog it or become flying projectiles when you turn the machine  on.  Your dishes are more likely to scratch, chip or break if there is something more than water being thrown at them.  Wipe around the drain with your sponge and soapy water.  Check the rest of the inside for an visible food remnants and remove them.

4)  If you don’t routinely run vinegar through your machine, now is the time to do it.  I fill the “Jet Dry” compartment with vinegar every couple weeks.  I’ve tried Jet Dry and the vinegar does a better job.  Plus, it’s waay cheaper.  If you have hard water, this will help keep your dishes clear and get rid of that filmy layer.  Also, if dish washing soap (like Dawn or Joy) gets put in the dishwasher use vinegar to eat the mountain of bubbles that will be created.  Just pour some in the bottom of the dishwasher, let it run for a couple minutes and check on it.  If there are still bubbles, add some more vinegar and repeat until they are gone.  Ok, if you don’t use vinegar routinely, fill a cup (dishwasher safe) with it and set the cup in the top rack of the dishwasher, standing upright.  If you don’t have vinegar, you can use baking soda.  Sprinkle it lightly around the drain on the bottom of the dishwasher.  Run your dishwasher through a cycle on the hottest setting possible.  Except for your cup of vinegar, the dishwasher should be empty.

Not too hard, and after you do it a time or two, you’ll be able to clean your dishwasher in just a few minutes, ok like maybe twenty minutes.  I only clean our dishwasher maybe once a month or two.  It will help your appliance last longer and keep your home smelling better.  Which, since our kitchen is right inside our front door, is important.  Who wants people to walk into their house and think “yuck, it kinda stinks in here?”  NOT ME!

I also found this at Mrs. Clean:

Gel Detergents

Mrs. Clean, Inc., does not recommend gel detergents! There are several reasons why.

  1. Gels typically contain bleach – primarily chlorine bleach – which causes rubber seals to break down and leak.
  2. Gels often leave a whitish or cloudy film on glassware.
  3. Gels tend to stick to the inside surface of the dishwasher, never really being rinsed off.
  4. Gels are intentionally thick so that they stick inside the soap cup and don’t run immediately into the bottom of the dishwasher. Therefore, they leave a sticky residue inside the soap dispenser, actually cause it to clog and not open during the timed sequence.
  5. Gels are not effective in hard water – and almost always leave spots.

Ok, so I didn’t know all that… Maybe you didn’t either?  Oh, please tell me I’m not the only one.  I just bought a bottle of the gel stuff, because it was the cheapest option and I’d already spent way more money than I wanted to that day, but we will probably be sticking with powder from here on out.  My Mr Right prefers it anyway.

Happy Cleaning!

Guest Post: Fairly Fabulous

Today we have Meagan here to introduce us to her adorable blog.  She is a lot of fun and has some great stuff over at Fairly Fabulous.  I love Meagan and her blog because I can relate in soo many ways, it’s always nice to know that there are others out there like you.

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

Meagan here from, well- my blog just got a pretty huge makeover (thank you, Sugar and Dots!) so now I’m coming to you from Fairly Fabulous: a mom’s quest through this fairly fabulous life!
What started as a Stay at Home Mom’s quest for her Bathing Suit body, quickly morphed into something much larger- a place for this {now} working mama to vent, share, create, and, well- just be- me, whatever ‘me’ is on a given day. I have to admit, when Krista announced she needed some help during her move, I jumped at the chance to be a tiny part of her fill in team. Little ole me? Over at While he was Napping?! Seriously? And she thinks I’m doing her a favor? In the words of Mater- SSHhhhooooot. – I digress….
When Krista gave me the big thumbs up for April 12th, I had a hundred things I wanted to post about. Surely by April 12th, I’ll have the huge bookshelf makeover I’ve been ‘in the middle of’ for over a month finished.
Surely I’ll have some direction for my living room color scheme to share with you excitedly!
Then there are all the fabulous new Spring and Easter items I’ll SURELY have completed and listed in my etsy shop.
But alas, life took over- none of those things are even CLOSE to ready and here we are- 9:07pm on April 11th. Breadwinner is here next to me on the couch- it’s a little like the twilight zone.
See, usually by now the girls are in bed (Big Sister- 4 1/2 yrs old, Little Sister 2 1/2 yrs old), Breadwinner is on his way to snoozing town, and I’m settled in the big comfy living room chair blogging my heart away.
Tonight, Breadwinner came home from work early, spent the entire evening playing with the girls, helping me put away laundry, and now snuggling on the couch. Twilight zone.
After a long, and less than perfect day-I now sit here with a much different perspective. See, we got a letter from our little friend in Uganda today. Four years ago, we decided to sponsor Talemwa through African Renewal Ministries. Every few months we get a letter from him with a picture letting us know how he’s doing. Today, he was thanking us for the *tiny* extra we sent for Christmas back in October. Do you know what he bought for himself? Our little 12 year old boy in Uganda bought a mattress. Not a PS3 game, songs for his ipod, or even a silly soccer ball- nope, a mattress.
After complaining to my husband for hours this evening about all the uncertainty and frustration in our lives right now, we opened our letter from Talemwa and got knocked back down a few hundred pegs.
So here I am- 9:32pm on April 11th- still not sure what I’m writing about, but feeling blessed. Oh so blessed with a garage full of paint, a room full of fabric, all the supplies I need to finish all my frivolous projects- and a nice comfy mattress that I didn’t have to buy with my Christmas money. Perspective. It’s a beautiful thing.
Krista- enjoy unpacking and decorating your new space! Thanks for letting me camp out in your little corner of the world today. I can’t promise my life or blog are always perfect, but I do my best to make things Fairly Fabulous! Stop by sometime and join me on my quest.

Thanks for coming Meagan.  That was so what I needed to read.  Our “dream home” has a few more quirks and wrinkles than we realized, so we’re working through that.  We still have stuff at my Mom’s house (a week into this moving process…) and we’re running out of room in our house.  We know we have too much stuff, but it just became so overwhelming while I was trying to put the cereal boxes away and we don’t have a SINGLE cabinet that is tall enough to put cereal boxes in.  It was that last straw on the camel’s back.  Thank you, Meagan, for the reminder that at least I have a house.  And too much stuff, instead of not even having a mattress to sleep on!

I hope you guys have a great day!  And remember what is really important in life!  It’s not the projects, the blog posts, the followers (although I have the best ones EVER!) or even lazy workmanship and cabinets that can’t hold cereal boxes.  I truly am a very fortunate, lucky, and blessed girl.  I hope you guys are too.

Now, get over to Meagan’s blog and say “hi!”  Tell her how famous she is now.  =]

Glass Stone Necklaces

This is a quick, easy and cheap little crafty project.  A fun, cute gift for the little girls in your life.  And they can even help out.

Here’s the How:
1)  You will need a glass stone for each necklace you plan to make, ribbon long enough to slip over your head, some scrap book paper, and stickers or self-adhesive vinyl.  I used Tacky Glue to put it all together.

2)  I used self-adhesive vinyl on the “k” and just cut it out with my Cricut.  Just make sure you cut it out backwards!  Ask me how I know this…  I used a sticker on the other necklace.  With the vinyl, just stick it right to the stone.  With a sticker, make a thin line of glue along the edges and stick it to the stone.

3)  Trace your stone on your scrap book paper.  If you do the vinyl, you will need two circles.  Fold your paper in half and cut out two identical circles.  If you use the sticker, you’ll just need one circle.  Glue the circle on with the print facing the stone.  Take your ribbon and fold it in half.

4)  Glue the ribbon onto the back of the paper.  Put a circle of glue around the edges and put your other circle on top of that, with the print facing away from the stone.  If you use the sticker, pull the backing off sticker and stick it to your scrap book circle (with the print facing away from the stone.  This is different than the vinyl.)  Stick your ribbon in between the sticky and the paper to help hold it in place.

5)  Tie a knot in your ends or attach necklace clasps to the ends of the ribbons.  Let dry completely before wearing.  You can still see a few glue spots in my photos, but when it’s all dry it’s clear, not the milky white you can see.  Sorry, I was too impatient to wait to do pictures.  Ta-DA!  All done.

I hope that all made sense.  It was basically the same technique for both necklaces, with a few alterations where necessary.  Hopefully, the pictures will help you get the idea.  If you still have questions, let me know.  If you try this, I’d love to see them!

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
